Sturgeon Bay High School Newsletter
November 2023
From the Principal
Hello Sturgeon Bay High School Families,
As we enter the month of November, it is hard to believe that we are finishing the first quarter of the year. Exams are on Monday and Tuesday, November 6 & 7. SBHS has an early release day on Tuesday, November 7 and another one for the entire district on Friday, November 10. High school students will be dismissed at 11:45am on those days.
Also, on Friday, November 10, we will be administering the Pre-ACT assessment to all Freshmen, Sophomore, and Junior students. Seniors will have the opportunity to sign up to meet with Mrs. O'Handley to go over scholarship applications or college applications on that morning. Otherwise, Seniors do not need to report to school on Friday.
With Veterans Day falling on Saturday, November 11, we just want to thank any and all of our families that have served in the Armed Services. Thank you for your sacrifice, your service, and for defending our freedoms.
Please take a few moments to review the newsletter below to see all the great things happening at Sturgeon Bay High School.
All my best,
Keith Nerby
Principal
Planning for College...Check out this Info about FASFA
The “New” FAFSA (FAFSA Simplification Act)... What Is It?
Perhaps you’ve seen the news, read articles or watched some videos about the updated FAFSA or financial aid application. Perhaps you haven’t. Either way, here is a direct link to the source and the information that is currently available. A short video, link to account creation and lists of necessary documents is available through this link. We still don’t have a specific application date to report, but it will be open some time in December. If you don’t have any previous experience with the application, then you won’t notice any changes but if you have worked with the FAFSA before, here are the changes you can expect to see.
Fewer Questions
The application has shrunk from 108 questions to 46 questions.
Increase in Number of Colleges to Receive Information
An increase from 10 colleges to up to 20 colleges can be sent information.
More Home Language Options
The application is now available in 11 languages.
Replacing the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) number with the Student Aid Index (SAI).
Families will see a different measure of their ability to pay for college and they’ll experience a change in the methodology used to determine aid.
Modifications to Family Definitions in FAFSA Formulas
Families can expect changes in how a student’s family size is determined aligning more with what was reported on the student/parents tax returns.
Expanding Access to Federal Pell Grants
Eligibility will be linked to family size and federal poverty levels.
Streamlining the FAFSA Form
A direct link will be made to IRS information and data when at all possible.

Spanish IV visited Sunrise School
Linking Schools and Language Through Literacy
Profesora Stenzel’s Spanish IV class recently visited Mrs. Nerby’s fourth grade class at Sunrise Elementary to read children’s books in Spanish. Each Spanish IV student chose a children’s book to present. Before the visit students studied vocabulary, verb tenses, and main points of their books. Additionally, the Spanish IV students practiced their pronunciation and presentational skills. The reading event was a success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all students.

Homeroom Activity Information
New Homeroom Activity at Sturgeon Bay High School
We have a new offering as a part of our weekly homeroom activities this year. The Can Do U video series will help us to teach Sturgeon Bay High School students everything from goal setting, time management and self discipline to empathy, kindness and mindfulness. Please check out this parent video from the Can Do U creator, Jeff Becker, and the first family newsletter with some great information and resources about our first lesson about purpose. Students will watch Can Do U videos on a regular basis during their Monday homerooms and use discussion prompts to discuss ideas and strategies. Our goal is to build a student body that is strong, resilient, goal oriented and ready for the world.

Cell Phone Expectations
We understand that cell phones and similar items are a way of life for many students and families. We also need to help teach our students when it is appropriate and not to use these devices. We thank you in advance for your partnership as we work to help students focus on academics and learning in the classrooms.
