Service Learning at California State University, Bakersfield

My name is Dr. April LaGue and I am the Faculty Coordinator for Service Learning at California State University, Bakersfield! Service Learning is an exciting way for our students to be engaged in learning while gaining a diverse and quality education. Over 50 courses at CSUB infuse service learning into their curriculum. This newsletter serves (no pun intended!) as a way to get information out to our campus about upcoming opportunities for service, past events that show how important service learning is to our community, and what we are doing to advocate service learning on our campus.

Service Learning Spotlight

CSU Bakersfield’s Kern Urban Teacher Residency program is a perfect example of service learning in collaboration with the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD). In a lab school housed at CSUB, Teacher Residents explore science, math and technology in meaningful ways with BCSD students using reflective and action-oriented learning activities that involved more than just the classroom. This included a component where BCSD participants volunteered at the CSUB edible garden. Garden projects were shared with the community at a family day hosted by CSUB and BCSD. Beneficiaries from this included CSUB Teacher Residents, Lab School students, the mentor teachers and parents of students at BCSD, and those who will receive edible garden produce. Outcomes included the opportunity for BCSD students to explore more science projects that connected directly to a theme (ecosystems and sustainability) that they were able to share with their families on community day. The Teacher Residents gained valuable service learning experience.

Opportunities for Students and Faculty to Engage in Service Learning

The CSUB Edible Garden will be hosting two Community Build Days on Saturday, September 30th and Saturday, October 21st. They will be located on campus in the shaded portion of the Science III Lawn and will take place from 1-3 PM. There will be a variety of building activities to help create the infrastructure of the garden, as well as family-friendly activities for all age groups to enjoy! The first fifty volunteers will receive a free Edible Garden fruit infuser water bottle! (Any questions please contact Summer Sullivan at

Hard at Work!

This photo was taken at last year's Celebrate CSUB Day! We invited the campus community to participate in building some of the raised garden beds. These will be a prominent feature in the CSUB Edible Garden!
