Hello Summer! and Fireflies & Mudpies
HELPING CHILDREN PROCESS DIFFICULT EVENTS and ENJOY THE SUMMER
Help your children process their feelings in a way that works for them - talking, drawing, painting, engaging in activity while talking. Model this for your children by doing the same yourself -- you have feelings to process too. Although your children may have difficulty expressing how they feel, it’s important to still talk about what feelings they may experience during this time. You can ask them directly how they are feeling, share how you feel, or even invite your child to draw or paint pictures about what they are doing or how they are feeling during this time. By encouraging and modeling this, your child will have a chance not only to express their own feelings, but to understand that it is okay to feel nervous, angry or sad during this time.
Encourage your children to write letters (or draw pictures) to their friends, teachers, grandparents, that they won’t be seeing or have not seen for a while. This can provide some of the closure that they need. It can also be helpful to write a letter to themselves about the the school year in general. Although this would obviously be symbolic, giving them a chance to reflect on both the great things and the hard things will allow them to process what they are going through, and it will give them something to look back at!
Make a bucket list of things you can do together over the summer. These don’t have to be complex activities, even simple things can be fun and memorable for your child. Ideas include having a movie marathon, doing a simple art project, trying new recipes, finding new places to walk/hike. Get out a calendar and jot down some fun ideas that you and your child can look forward to doing together.
TALKING TO YOUR CHILDREN ABOUT DIFFICULT EMOTIONS/EVENTS
• The first thing to remember is to acknowledge that your child’s feelings are valid. To do this, you can say things like “I know this is hard,” or “Missing your friends and teachers must make you feel sad.”
• Then, remind your child that you are there to support them – that you are not too busy or unavailable to talk or help them process what they are going through. A great way to do this is by using the word “Let’s.” For example, “Let’s talk about this,” “Let’s think about what we can do.” Using this terminology reminds them that they are not facing this alone.
• Lastly, we want to encourage you to help your child reflect on, and talk about, the school year and any stressful events. It may seem like this would bring up more negative emotions, but allowing your child to share about what they enjoyed, what they miss, etc. can be a great way to help them safely process what has happened.
• Remember, we have all experienced massive changes over the past few months. We have all been affected, and we are all doing the best we can. So, make sure you give your child, and yourself, extra grace.
Our hopes for you this summer are that you all:
Keep safe
Stay healthy
Make good choices
Consider fun summer school activities
Continue creating positive, happy memories
Incorporate gratitude into everyday
