The childhood of James oglethorpe

James Oglethorpe was born on December 22, 1696 in London, England. James had a comfortable childhood because his father owned land in different parts of England. In 1698, James father was elected to the house of commons. In 1714, he was admitted to Corpus Christi college at Oxford university.

James Oglethorpe is the founder of Georgia. Years afterwards when he helped found and colonize Georgia. He would serve as the general of the forces. In 1739, he was involved in the war of Jenkins Ear.During that war they fought between Britain and Spain as a part of a larger conflict. The War of Jenkins Ear lasted through 1739 - 1748, with major operations largely ended by 1742. The seeds of conflict begin with a separation from an ear.

Georgia Colony

In 1733, James Oglethorpe was given a charter from King George II to create a new colony which he would name Georgia. This was located South Carolina and Florida. It had two main purposes to serve as a place were debtors in prison could go to start anew and serve it as a barrier against spanish expansion from Florida.

Debtor means: A person who is in debt or financial obligation to another. The development of Georgia was unlike all the other British colonies. First of all it was last to be created. Georgia was founded in 1733, 126 years after Jamestown was successfully planted. In 1733, a group of settlers joined Oglethorpe to found Savannah, Georgia.

Georgia was founded in 1733, in refuge for criminals. Along with criminals in the early colonial times, Jews found refuge in the colony. The main church was the Anglicans church. The church constituted the most influential and largest congregation of christians. It though wasn't the official religion of the state.

George Whitefield was the prominent english preacher in the early 18th century. He founded bethesda, which was a home for orphans near Savannah in the 1740's he was also a major evangelist for the Anglicans church. Bethesda continued until 1805, when it burned down but was revived in 1855.
