Sproul & Watson Going to State!!
Our community was given a first-hand look at the robotics competition as Widefield High School hosted the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Southern Regional Qualifying Round. Twenty-one teams from across the state came to Widefield to compete for the final few seats at the state competition.
The challenge is designed for students in grades 7–12 to compete head to head, using a sports model. Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots in a 10-week build period to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using Java or the MIT App Inventor.
Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.
Widefield School District 3 secondary schools developed six FTC robotics teams this school year. Four out of the six teams were able to engineer their robot to compete in the FTC competitions this year. Those three teams were DR Robotics (Discovery High School), Watson Robotics (Watson Jr. High), Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Jaguars (Janitell Jr High) and Spartans (Sproul Jr. High). Out of the four competitive robotics teams, two Widefield District teams advanced to the state finals competition in Denver, CO. to be held Saturday February 18th.
Watson and Sproul Jr. High are the first state qualifiers in a robotics competition in Widefield’s history. Sproul’s Robotics Team (Spartans) was recognized this year for several awards during two state qualifying rounds. The Motivate and Inspire awards were given to Sproul Jr. High which recognized their teamwork, knowledge, professionalism and accomplishments in the development and engineering of their robot.

WSD3 Orchestra Festival
Amazing performance on Saturday at the WSD3 Orchestra Festival. The festival was comprised of two ensembles. The first one, WSD3 Beginning Honor Orchestra, was a teacher selected group of fifth graders from Widefield Elementary and any student that qualified as a beginner at the junior high level. There were 67 students total from WES, Janitell, Sproul and Watson who participated. District 3 orchestra teachers were the clinicians for that ensemble.
The second ensemble was the WSD3 Advanced Honor Orchestra. Those students auditioned for placement in the group and had multiple rehearsals prior to the festival. The ensemble was comprised of 37 students from Janitell, Sproul and Watson. They had a guest clinician, Mrs. Michelle Ewer from Arvada.
