Comet Community - We Need YOU
Cheer for a Cure, the organization that I founded to honor the memory of my mother (with immense help from friends and family) was born right here in Genoa High School. The incredible people of this community worked hard to help build this event and organization to what it is today... a grass roots 501(c)(3) national, non-profit organization. Collectively as cheerleaders, coaches, and fans we raise money to donate to families who have loved ones suffering from cancer and need assistance to alleviate the added stress of medical house-hold bills.
One can’t prepare for tragedy.. and when it hits, it strikes hard. We seek to stand in the gap for those who need help, to aid in softening the blow. It is only right that when one of our very own children is suffering, we use this opportunity to GIVE BACK and COVER their family with love, encouragement, and monetary support.
Carson, a sophomore at Genoa High School was diagnosed earlier in the school year with Leukemia and has been receiving treatment over the past 3 months. He has a very long and tough road ahead. Please consider giving to help us support his family in the battle of his LIFE.
ALL DONATIONS received to this page will given to directly to the family of Carson, after our 15th Annual Cheer for a Cure event, January 19th.
Thank you for being a part of CARSON'S COMETS!

Genoa Students Visit Universal Marble and Granite
Seven students from Emerging Technologies visited Universal Marble and Granite in Perrysburg on Wednesday afternoon. The students took part in a guided tour throughout their facility. The students were privileged to see where in the world the granite was mined and then were able to witness the process that it undergoes from a natural resource to a usable kitchen countertop. The students were shown the similarities of wood CNC work to what a life size marble cutting CNC looked like.
At the end of the guided tour, the students were able to pick a few smaller pieces to take back to school and use and engrave in their new BOSS Laser that the class purchased for student use.
A special thanks to Universal Marble and Granite for their willingness to showcase their business and donate materials that will be used in class!
Adam Vargo completes his first work piece on the new BOSS Laser in Emerging Technologies class.
2018 Reading Challenge Complete!

My favorite book that I read was the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. Before I started the series, I read many reviews and asked around if it was a good series and I heard all good things so I started reading it. The plot was very interesting with many things that will leave you shocked. While reading I couldn't put it down. The second and third books of the series were just as good and I am excited to read the final one for my 2019 challenge.

Of the twenty-five books that I read my favorite book was Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King. This book was my favorite for many reasons. The first being that I love Stephen King as a writer. This book is about a woman who killed her husband and is a suspect in the murder of another woman many years later. I have read many of his books and they all catch my attention greatly. Another reason this book was my favorite is that it had so many details and interesting sections throughout it. This book is considered a psychological thriller which is the type of book I love to read the most. Overall I thought it was a very good book, and I never wanted to put it down.

Churchill in the Trenches by Peter Apps This was a book I stumbled upon that provided insight into the life of Winston Churchill during World War I, long before he became famous for leading Great Britain during World War II. It was interesting to read about Churchill's selfless decision to leave his government position at the time to go to the front during WWI and be part of the fighting. I never knew this about Churchill before so it was exciting to find out something very new about an historical figure.

I read a lot of amazing books in 2018, but my favorite was unquestionably Life of Pi by Yann Martel. I loved everything about the book, and it gave me a new perspective on the world. I didn't expect to enjoy Life of Pi as much as I did, but I'm beyond glad that I read it.
Sara Partin
My favorite book that I read in 2018 was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I am very into thrillers and mysteries and have read a fair share of them and I am always looking for a book more thrilling and mysterious than the last. I don't think any book I read will top the twists and turns that happen in Gone Girl. Needless to say, Gone Girl has become my favorite book I have ever read.

Out of the 25 books I read, my favorite was definitely either The Hunger Games series or The Guernsey Literacy and Potato Peel Pie Society. The Hunger Games was action-packed and hard to put down, but TGLPPPS was written in a way that made me fall in love with the characters and the book itself. TGLPPPS was written completely in letters and took place after World War 2. Its format was interesting, and I would definitely read it again.

I can’t say enough good things about Circe, by Madeline Miller. The novel is a loose retelling of the Odyssey from the perspective of Circe, the witch who (I’m sure all GHS students remember) turns Odysseus’s men into pigs in the original Greek epic. It’s riveting, powerful, and makes the reader rethink the original story. Definitely recommend for anyone who’s interested in mythology, fantasy, or just an addicting story.

The Genoa Indoor Track & Field Club opened it’s second season on Sunday at the Northwest District Invite at the University of Findlay. Competing for the girls team were Anna Sutter, Rylee Fredrickson, Sara Partin, Jordyn Bronowski, and Mallorie Mefford. The girls turned in strong performances, and finished 15th out of 32 scoring teams. Anna Sutter set a new indoor club record in the long jump, while Rylee Fredrickson (800m, 200m) and Sara Partin (mile run) established initial indoor club marks.
Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, the team finished in 4th place out of 28 scoring teams. Bobby Bench won the triple jump with a new indoor club mark of 35’-1”, while Kenny Reno took second place. Sean Hoeft lowered his 3200m time, Brock Hochanadel lowered the 200m mark, and Timothy Materni debuted in his first high school level meet. Great enthusiasm was on display as the indoor track & field club kicked off year two strong!

I would like to take this time to announce to you an important presentation our students will be receiving on Friday February 8th. Through partnership with Rite Aid all Genoa High School students will be provided with information regarding the current opiode crisis.
Based up 2017 data the National Safety Council announced Americans are more likely to die from an opiode overdose (1 in 96) than all motor vehicle crashes combined (1 in 103).
Please join us in conversation with your children regarding the dangers associated with opiode use.
As always,
Go Comets!
