Newsletter Term 3 Week 8
St Patrick's School Masterton 14th September 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
This week at school we are celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. This special week provides an opportunity to celebrate and deepen our knowledge and understanding of Te Reo Māori, helping to secure its future as a living, dynamic, and rich language. This year’s theme is again 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’. ‘Kia Kaha’ is well known in New Zealand English with its correct Māori meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.
“Strength for an endangered language comes from its status, people being aware of how to support revitalisation, people acquiring and using it and from the language having the right words and terms to be used well for any purpose."
Due to alert level restrictions we have had to make some decisions in terms of what Term 3 events/ activities we can hold for the rest of this term. Details for this include:
ArtSplash in Wellington - sadly cancelled for 2021
School based masses - will resume at alert level 1

PTA Disco - postponed until Term 4 when we are at alert level 1
Student-Led-Conferences - postponed until Term 4 when we are at alert level 1
Catholic Schools Day - will be celebrated in-house with us not joining together with other schools
Teacher-Only-Day - postponed until 2022
Listed below are updated end of term key events:
- September 13th - ‘Te wiki o te Reo Maori’ week
- September 17th - Mufti Day: Masterton Food Bank
- September 29th - Catholic Schools Day
- October 1st - Last day of term 3
- October 18th - First day of term 4
- December 15th - Final day of 20121 school year (mid-day finish)
As we begin to plan for the 2022 school year one of our first jobs is to set the dates for each school term. The Ministry of Education gives us guidelines as to the dates we must start and end the year within and we can choose what suits our school. Each school will always have the same number of school days regardless of when they start and finish. This year we are looking at the possibility of starting later than we have done in previous years which would then mean we would finish later at the end of the year. If you have any thoughts or opinions as to preferred dates could you please share these via this short survey - survey link.
Ngā mihi o Te Atua,

Gospel of the Week:
Mark 8:27-35
Peter's Declaration about Jesus
27 Then Jesus and his disciples went away to the villages near Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Tell me, who do people say I am?”
28 “Some say that you are John the Baptist,” they answered; “others say that you are Elijah, while others say that you are one of the prophets.”
29 “What about you?” he asked them. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
30 Then Jesus ordered them, “Do not tell anyone about me.”
Jesus Speaks about His Suffering and Death
31 Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: “The Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. He will be put to death, but three days later he will rise to life.” 32 He made this very clear to them. So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But Jesus turned around, looked at his disciples, and rebuked Peter. “Get away from me, Satan,” he said. “Your thoughts don't come from God but from human nature!”
34 Then Jesus called the crowd and his disciples to him. “If any of you want to come with me,” he told them, “you must forget yourself, carry your cross, and follow me. 35 For if you want to save your own life, you will lose it; but if you lose your life for me and for the gospel, you will save it.

Over lockdown many of the children were busy doing activities that helped consolidate their understanding of the zones and which emotions are associated with each zone. Now we are starting to look at expected and unexpected behaviours and the impact that those behaviours have on others. We have talked about how an expected behaviour in the classroom may be that you put up your hand to talk but if you put up your hand to talk at home that would be seen as strange behaviour. The children are working on understanding that different behaviours are appropriate at different times.
Before lockdown four of our students went to Fernridge School to take part in a conservation ecology workshop. Here are some accounts of the day.
On the Enviro day at Fernridge school we did lots of fun activities. At the start of the day we had a talk about the native bush and what it was like before humans came to New Zealand in our big wakas and called Aotearoa our home. Next we went outside and replanted some trees and made a veggie garden. Then we went back inside and looked for bugs in the leaves. We found lots of bugs. We went back outside to find more bugs, there were a lot of worms. We put all of the bugs and leaves back where we found them so they can stay in their environment. Last we made art to represent what we did and what to represent mother Earth and nature. My drawing showed pollution on the Earth and how it is bad.

Four people went to Fernridge School including me. We were there because we were learning about the environment.
What we learned about - We learned about bugs and soil and so much more.
What we did there - We did some planting and looked at some bags. We also made a great garden and so much more.
Thank you Fernridge and Emilie for having us.
