A Note and a Resource from Andrea at Brophy
Here are a few of my "collection" of calm breathing and mindfulness videos/activities I mentioned yesterday. They, of course, are embraced best by the students that I have had doing it since Kindergarten, bc they know it as part of the routine. Starting fresh with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders can take a few weeks bc some kids may be self-conscious and there are often at least one of two that are uncomfortable with the quiet at first and breath loudly to create attention... A few things help with that. 1) reminding them of the immediate and longer term benefits 2) clarifying that this is part of being responsible, respectful, prepared and even safe (and you can explain how each of these fits- following directions, allowing yourself and those around you to benefit from the activity, etc) and 3) you can let them know that if it is "tricky" (intentionally or unintentionally) to do at first, you are happy to give them individualized practice time at lunch/after class (I did this with a few kids the first year or two... and it not only helped them be successful with breathing calmly with the group afterwards, but it gave us some of that extra getting to know you/bonding time that is so beneficial, too. Again, it may take some time (especially with older grades) for it to feel good to everyone... but you may find it to be worth it. :)

A Message from Ellen about Ordering
Well, through your amazing skills as a teacher, you have made it through over 90% of the school year. Out of 180 school days, you only have 16-1/2 left. Every piece of visual artwork, piece of music played, piece of music sung, song written, play or monologue written, performance acted, dance danced, etc., was the result of the inspiration you have given to your students to teach them about the Fine and Performing Arts. You have showed them that "Arts Matter" and you have done a great job!
We all know in order to accomplish this we have to supply the base materials necessary to turn creativity into something concrete. To make this happen again next year, we need to order supplies. Please be advised that it is now time to get your orders together for next year's supplies.
To those of you ordering through School Specialty, please know that we have set it up with the vendor that you can now fill up your shopping cart and submit it to me for approval and we can actually choose the "ship-to arrive date" when placing the order. I am planning to request an arrival date in the schools to be Friday, August 16th. Since you will not be permitted to have access to your school until August 21st, I believe that will be a good day. Please let me know if you need to change that in your school. They will actually "pick and box" the order upon receipt and store it in their warehouse facility until the requested ship date so we do not have to worry about the backorders and lack of staff in their shipping facilities that we experienced last year.
You can also order from other specialty vendors when necessary by going to their website, creating an order and printing it out and scanning the order to me. I will take that information and get a PO to place the order. The TEC Bid information arrived today with special pricing for the following vendors, Blick,Cascade, GA Blanco,National Art, Office Depot,Pyramid Products, Rasix (Printer Ink), School Specialty, SS Worldwide, Tree House (Toner),Triarco, and WB Mason. Please let me know if you need any of these TEC Bid vendor sheets. In most cases, School Specialty will try to match prices if possible.
I can order through Amazon but please be aware that I can only process one order at a time; I get the order from you, get a req, get a PO, order the shipment, receive the shipment, request payment of the PO, and then I can place the next order. This process can sometimes take up to 2-3 weeks or, sometimes 2-3 days - there are many variables.
The budget has not been approved yet so for now, order your supplies using figures that you were given last year. If you need a reminder, just email me and I will be happy to send you last year's amounts. There could be less than last year's but hopefully they will be the same.
I will need to get these orders from you by June 10th so that I can review them and contact you if Donna or I have any questions. Please email me with any questions you may have about ordering or you can also call me- I love to hear your voices!- at Ext. 27701.
Have a great week
