Fulmore Middle School

Week of April 28, 2019

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE

Greetings Falcon Nation,

Capstone Projects were presented today and our students and teachers have simply out done themselves! Thank you for all of your dedication and hard work. The service projects and the research each student conducted was impressive. I know that these students are our next generation of change makers.

Please congratulate our falcon track team for placing runner-up in the zone city championship meet last night. Several athletes placed in the top six in their events. Thank you to our wonderful track coaches, teachers and parents for your patience and support with our student athletes.

Congratulations to Aaron Walls, he has been accepted to the All-city jazz band here in Austin. It is wonderful that he is representing Fulmore so well with his participation in this jazz group. We are so proud!

Theater

If you were lucky enough to get tickets to the sold out show, No Body to Murder, we have a special request to please tip your wait staff. Our students will be acting as your wait staff the night of the performance. The cost of your tickets went 100% to the food and table decor. So, our waiters will be competing for the most tips the night of the show. All tips will go to the student's Drama Banquet budget. Our students look forward to serving and entertaining you!

Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Our students will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo on Friday May 3rd during all grade level lunches. We will have music for all! Families are welcome to come and join in the fun. If you would like to help with decorating our cafeteria for this celebration please email Priscilla.Hernandez@austinisd.org.

8th Grade Balloon Car Races

8th grade students have designed balloon race cars. They have done an outstanding job and it is so great to see all of their creations come to life. Thank you, 8th Science teachers for providing meaningful learning experiences for our 8th graders. You can see live video clips of our students’ cars in action by visiting our Twitter page (@FulmoreFalcons) and check out the photos below to see the innovative projects.

Project Description from Mr. Vasquez

Our 8th grade Pre-AP. students had to make a vehicle that rolled and was powered by a balloon and straw. The only rules were: use only one standard straw; a 9"or 11" balloon; and the wheels had to be of an item which was NOT intended to be a wheel. There were no restrictions on body or design. Creativity abounded! Our fastest vehicle went 1.1m/s (approx. 2 .4 mph). Our longest distance vehicle went over 18 meters (over 59 feet).

Math Summer Bridge Program

Middle School’s Office, Academics, AVID and GEAR UP are partnering again this year to host AVID Summer Math Bridge for rising seventh and eighth graders. This summer program is best for students who are taking Advanced Math classes and need that extra boost to be ready for Algebra or Advanced Math next school year. This is a fun and exciting hands-on camp that you will not want to miss.

  • Applications/Registration due on Friday May 3rd
  • Submit all applications to your child’s math teacher
  • Please see attached flyer for more details

Middle School Years

Middle school is tough and not just for our students! Our parents and teachers also experience difficulty with communicating and motivating adolescents. It kind of comes with the territory. Please find attached, our first issue of Middle School Years Working Together for School Success. In this issue you will find tips for homework, parent engagement, dealing with adolescent emotions, meal time discussions and more! I hope you find the article informative and helpful.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the nice weather while it lasts. It looks like a rainy forecast for next week so be sure to prepare accordingly. See you on Monday!

8TH GRADE MAGNET DINNER

On May 17th, we will have our annual 8th grade Magnet Dinner in the Fulmore Cafeteria from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. This is a wonderful event where we celebrate our Falcons taking flight to high school. A pasta dinner with lasagna, vegetarian and gluten free options will be served. Tickets are $10.00 a piece and may be purchased through the magnet office through Friday, May 10th. It is also our tradition to ask our 7th grade Magnet students and parents to help set-up, serve, and clean-up so that our 8th grade families can celebrate.

The highlight of the evening features a slide show with two pictures of each of our 8th graders, one from their childhood and one current. We also like to provide our 8th graders with a small gift. We need your help to make this event special. Please email Ms. Northcutt if you can assist with the following:

  1. Creating the Falcons Take Flight Slide Show (Ms. Northcutt has a template for this).
  2. Donating desserts for the dinner
  3. Donating money to fund a gift for our 8th graders
  4. Securing a gift for our 8th graders to remember their time at Fulmore Magnet.
  5. 7th grade students and parents who can help set-up from 4:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., serve dinner from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., or clean up from 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

We would like to have all of the pictures of our 8th graders and donations in by Friday, May 10th so that we have the following week to prepare. Thanks so much for your help, we hope to see all of you at the dinner!
