From the Principal's Desk...

Dear Highview Families,

Happy Friday! As a reminder, the Nanuet Elementary PTA will host a Spring Fling for K-4 families TONIGHT from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Nanuet Outdoor Education Center (OEC). All K-4 families from G.W. Miller and Highview Schools are invited to attend. Please bring your blanket, dinner, and prepare for a fun time celebrating an amazing school year. Many thanks to our fabulous PTA for organizing this event!

On Monday, May 22, our fourth-grade students will participate in ELA Field Testing for New York State (NYS). A critical part of the test development process is the field-testing of questions in schools throughout the State in order to ensure the validity and reliability of the NYS Testing Program. The goal is to require the least amount of testing necessary to build and administer high quality NYS assessments that provide accurate information about student achievement. If your child opted-out of the state assessment for ELA, he/she will be opted out of the field-testing as well. Typically, the field tests are much shorter than the actual state assessments; therefore, the administration of the test will be quicker than during the regular ELA testing window. The state uses results from the field-testing process to make updates to the questions on state tests. The results do not have an impact on the student’s overall score on the regular ELA assessment.

On Thursday, May 25, the Nanuet Elementary PTA will host the first-ever Highview Reading Under the Stars Knight. All of our third- and fourth-grade students and families are invited to attend this event. The event is similar to the PARP Knight for PreK-2 students in March. Please bring a blanket, dinner, and your favorite book to read. Ms. Mehu and I will be Guest Readers that night. We look forward to reading under the stars together!

I hope you and your loved ones have a wonderful weekend.

Sincerely,

Matthew Lutz

Principal

Charter Shout-Outs for the Week

On a rotating basis, classroom teachers nominate two students from their classes to receive a Charter Shout-Out. The class charter is a RULER anchor tool used in all classrooms to help students develop expectations for success as learners and members of the community. The Charter Shout-Out gives teachers the opportunity to highlight students who are living up to their classroom charters.

This week, students in Mrs. Mitlof and Mrs. Tarique's classes received shout-outs and were recognized over morning announcements. Congratulations to Rayan (3-4 AM), John (3-4 AM), Daniel (3-4 GST), and James (3-4 GST). Please see their proud picture below!

Principal's Pride

Being the Principal of Highview Elementary School brings me, Mr. Lutz, a tremendous amount of joy and pride. I am the luckiest person in the world to be able to work with such incredible students, staff, and families. This week, I would like to take a moment to honor and thank our fabulous Assistant Principal, Ms. Myrtelle Mehu. As you know, Ms. Mehu joined our Highview family this past summer. Ms. Mehu's passion for teaching and learning is contagious. She is compassionate, kind, and welcoming to all who have the great fortune of crossing paths with her. She is a valued member of our school community and a wonderful addition to our K-4 administrative team. Thank you, Ms. Mehu, for being such an amazing partner. It is truly a pleasure to lead alongside you!

Incoming Grade 3 Parent Orientation

It is hard to believe that we are in the month of May. On Tuesday, May 9, we welcomed the parents of students who will enter Grade 3 in September 2023 to an Incoming Grade 3 Parent Orientation. We were thrilled to partner with families to explain the transition to Highview Elementary School. Of course, if any families of our future Highview Knights need support throughout this important transition, we encourage them to contact our Main Office at (845) 627-3460. I have included the slideshow we shared with parents during the orientation below.

Internet Safety

Internet safety is an important topic for us to discuss with children. At Highview, we speak with students about Digital Citizenship and how their interactions online contribute to their Digital Footprint. Included below is a flyer that outlines an Internet Safety Training for parents. Please check it out if it interests you!

Goals and Priorities Update - 2022.2023

During the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, March 28, we presented the amazing work our students have been doing this school year. We highlighted the great gains they have made as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. Additionally, we spoke to the amazing work our staff and students are doing to implement and infuse the RULER approach to Social-Emotional Learning. We are grateful to be able to collaborate with our students and families! Be sure to check out the presentation below.

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

Please click the link below to access our Arrival/Dismissal Procedures. It is important that we work together to follow these protocols in order to ensure an efficient, safe process for both students and staff. As a reminder, there are no U-turns permitted on Highview Avenue. If you drive your child to school and arrive after 8:45 a.m., you must park at Grace Baptist Church and walk your child to school. It is unsafe to drop off students in the crosswalk on Highview Avenue while buses are unloading. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Bus Safety

We are fortunate to offer universal busing here in the Nanuet Union Free School District. As you know, the safety of our students is our top priority. We have three simple BUS rules:

  • Be a good listener.
  • Use a quiet voice.
  • Stay seated at all times.

Please review these rules with your child and remind them that riding the bus is a privilege, not a right. We need to work together to ensure our students experience a safe and orderly bus ride to and from school. Please note that undesirable or unsafe behavior could result in a loss of bus privileges as determined by the Principal or Assistant Principal. We appreciate your partnership.

Code of Conduct

The Board of Education is committed to providing a safe and orderly school environment where students may receive and district personnel may deliver quality educational experiences without disruption or interference. We ask that you read and review the Code of Conduct for Grades K-4 with your child. Our goal is to ensure students are engaged in learning while making positive contributions to our school community.

Digital Backpack

Each week, documents will be loaded to our Digital Backpack, which is linked to the bottom of the Highview homepage. We encourage you to check the Digital Backpack, which is updated every Friday, to ensure you have updated information on important dates, events, and opportunities being offered to students and families.

Safety and Security Protocols

As you know, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority in the Nanuet Union Free School District. In an effort to ensure our building is safe and secure, we have made some revisions to our visitor policies and procedures at Highview School. The protocols are outlined in the document below.
