Staff Spotlight
ESL Teacher, Mrs. Kerry Stockdale
Interventionist, Mrs. Marisa Caruso
It has been an exciting start to my thirteenth year at Torey J. Sabatini Elementary School. I began my time in the district after relocating from Connecticut after meeting my husband. I taught 4th and 5th grade in Stamford, Connecticut prior to my move to New Jersey. I was lucky enough to begin my teaching career at a Responsive Classroom school which molded me into the educator I am today. Establishing relationships with my students and building a community of learners have always been at the forefront of my work. After over two decades as a classroom teacher, I began a new journey as an Interventionist at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. I am thoroughly enjoying the change and challenge of my new role.
My husband is a Health/Physical Education Teacher. Our daughter is the absolute joy of our lives. She just became part of our townβs travel soccer league so when my husband and I are not teaching you can find us on the field. Additionally, we love to spend time in Florida where my mother resides. Another family favorite is our trips to New England. We love all things fall and have a lot of friends and family we enjoy visiting in that area.

News from PE Teacher, Mr. Gerenstein
For the month of October, students have been very busy in PE. Now that we are done with some of the beginning of-the-year routines, we can move on to some manipulative skills.
As part of our daily warm-up, students were able to work on their hand-eye coordination by learning the skill and practicing juggling. Kindergarten and first graders practiced with juggling scarves, fourth and fifth graders practiced with bean bags, and second and third graders had a choice of the scarves and beanbags. Continuing with the hand-eye coordination theme, the younger grades did such activities as The Perfect Pass, which focused on throwing and catching, and Go Fishing, which focused on rolling. The older grades saw the return of a TJS favorite, Castle Ball!!! This activity combines a hula hoop skill we learned in September, also throwing, catching, offensive and defensive strategies, along with teamwork and cooperative skills.
Some special activities that happened this month is a kindergarten classic, Double Bubble which focuses on team building within the class. We also saw the return of a combined Music and PE class called "MUPE" where a music and PE class combined to play the game Mousetrap as one big group. For Halloween, some classes did the very spooky Zombie Tag!!!
A couple of new routines students are learning in PE are Yoga and our Walk and Talk. Depending on the class, students will have a cool down/reflection time for 1-2 minutes at the end of class. This will be done by doing some yoga/stretching or with a Walk and Talk when students cool down by walking by themselves, with a partner, or with a group and reflect on something they did well in class, something they may want to improve on, something they learned, and/or something their classmates did well. Not only are students able to self-reflect and reflect on their classmates, but this also gives students time to lower their heart rates and cool down before heading back to class.
As a reminder, sneakers are very important in PE. We do a lot of running and moving, along with the rock wall. In order for students to move safely and effectively, sneakers should be worn on PE days. Thank you so much for your continued support!!! Have a great weekend and a Happy Halloween!
