THIS WEEK'S FEATURED TEACHER (NEW PRINCIPAL!)
DAVID MCKAY
Education:
Piedmont Hills High School, San Jose, 1992
BA English, minor in Spanish, Chico State 1999
Single subject bilingual credential, Chico State 2000
Masters degree in Education, University of Scranton, 2005
Administrative Services Credential, 2007
Professional Experience:
I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I taught my first kid how to swim across the pool as a 17-year-old lifeguard. That look of trust, gratitude, and joy he gave me when his head popped out of the water is one I'll never forget. I came up to Chico to go to school after I finished the active duty portion of my Marine Corps enlistment, did my student teaching at Chico High and got hired to teach 9th-12th grade English in 2000. In 2007, I moved over to Fair View to start the BLAST program there. The next year I became the vice principal and then four years later got promoted to principal when the legendary Mr. Vig retired. I served as principal of Fair View, AFC, CAL, and Oakdale until 2015, when I was promoted to Director of Secondary Education. I loved working with the Bidwell staff and I missed working with kids every day, so I jumped at the chance to be your new principal. I'll have at least one child at Bidwell for the next seven years, so I don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon!
Personal Info:
I was born and raised in an amazing neighborhood in San Jose, but after 20+ years, Chico is my HOME. I met my best friend and amazing wife, Jill, while we were both teachers at Chico High. We have been married for 13 years and have three awesome kids, Owen (6), Maddie (8), and Emma (11). I'm a lifelong Oakland Raiders fan and grew up playing football, basketball, baseball, and soccer my whole life. I will definitely be seeing some of you kiddos on the courts at lunchtime. Bring your A-game! :)
Mr. McKay will be Bidwell's new principal beginning in the 2017-2018 school year.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
SPINAL SCREENING PROGRAM
The school nurse will be screening students for possible curvature of the spine (scoliosis) on April 11, 2017. State law requires that school districts in California provide scoliosis screening for seventh grade girls and eighth grade boys. Scoliosis is a term that means lateral curvature of the spine. It is most commonly found in the preadolescent years and progresses during the period of rapid growth. Its cause is unknown. If a spinal curvature is detected early and appropriately treated, progressive spine deformity can be prevented.
Since it will be necessary to have students partially undress to accomplish the screening, privacy will be maintained. The student can wear gym clothes or other clothing that can be removed easily. The screening will take place during P.E class.
If the screening indicates need for further medical evaluation, you will be notified by a letter which is mailed to the current address on file. If your child is currently under treatment for a spinal problem, please let the school nurse know. Please send a note to the health office only if you do not want your child screened.
