PSSA Sport starts this week

PSSA sport starts this Friday and Banksmeadow has students involved in AFL, Softball and Cricket. Each week the PSSA teams are transported by bus to play against other school teams at venues dedicated to the sport. We are privileged to be part of the competition and wish all our teams the very best of luck. Please be sure to sign permission notes and pay the weekly bus fee for your child to travel to PSSA venues otherwise they will not be able to participate. Training will commence this Friday 21st February on the school oval from 8:15am.

For this week softball and cricket matches will be held at Nagle Park, while AFL is always held at Heffron Park near the netball courts.

For further information, including cancellations, change in routine and game results follow us on twitter (@BanksmeadowPS) for live updates. Draws for each sport can be found by clicking on the link below.

Zone Swimming Carnival

36 amazing swimmers will represent Banksmeadow P.S in the upcoming Zone Swimming Carnival next Thursday 27th February. Information, including permission notes, programs and participants events, has already been sent out. Please ensure those students attending have their permission notes and entry fee returned to the school office by Friday 21st February.

Please enjoy these action shots taken from the school swimming carnival.

A big congratulations goes to Jade (5M) who was been selected in the ESPSSA Open Girls Basketball team to trial in the SEPSSA team. This is a great achievement and we wish her all the best for the representative season ahead.

Library News

All classes, except Kindergarten, have started library lessons and are borrowing books to enjoy at home or in their class. Kindergarten will begin borrowing on Monday. We encourage children to have respect for and care for our books. As part of this, children have a library bag to take their books to and from school in order to minimise damage. If books are damaged or lost they need to be paid for.

Dance News

Congratulations to the students who have been selected for the school dance groups. Senior Dance group starts next Monday 24th February and Juniors next Friday 28th February. Please wear sports uniform or dance wear for your lesson.

Guitar News

Guitar started at school today, Thursday 20 February. Lessons cost $12 and are on each Thursday at lunchtime.

Life Education

Life Education lessons for Preschool - Year 4 will be on at school from next Thursday 27 February until Tuesday 4 March. While most students love meeting Healthy Harrold, this program also supports the learning taking place in PD/H/PE and empowers our students to make informed choices for a safe and healthy life. Please remember to return your permission notes and payments for this program.

Safety Reminder

A reminder that children and parents are not permitted to use the preschool as a thoroughfare into the school.

Did you know that if a child misses as few as eight days of school per term, by the end of Primary school they will have missed an entire year of education?

Regular attendance at school is essential to assist students to maximise their potential. When children miss out on school, they miss out on vital information, their learning routine is disrupted, they can lose confidence and can miss out on developing friendships.

Please be reminded that if your child is unable to attend school, a note detailing the reason needs to be provided to your child's class teacher as soon as possible, or within seven days of the absence.

Keeping Second Hand Smoke Away from Young Lungs

While it is common knowledge that smoking is prohibited on all school grounds in NSW, many people may not realise that smoking at the school gate is also prohibited. Just like outside public buildings, smokers are required to be at least 4 metres from the entrance to a school. So please, if you feel the need for a smoke, move as far away as you can from the school gates.

For more information on the laws about smoking around public buildings, click on the following link.

Chess Club 2014

Love games? From the Four-Move Checkmate to Castling, our students have been having fun learning their chess moves. The Chess Club is open Tuesday lunch times in the library. Your move!
