March 2023
Spring Is Here!
It is so hard to believe that we are approaching the end of the school year! We have a lot of fun events to look forward to; however, we also need to stay focused on ending the year strong! Right after Spring Break, there are several important assessments that students will be engaged in -- Georgia Milestones, DIBELs, MAP, and district End of The Year Assessments. We will be sending out more information so you know exactly when your child is taking their assessments. We want all of our students to do their best, so please encourage your child(ren) to stay focused while they are at school.
Your thoughts and opinions are very important to us! This year, the school district is again giving Educational Effectiveness Surveys (EES) to get feedback on nine characteristics of high-performing schools. Families, it is your turn to provide feedback about your experience with Gwinnett County Public Schools. The EES Family Survey is available from February 28 through March 10. Please respond by clicking this link: https://ceesurveys.questionpro.com/gcps-fam-23?CID=312656&DVB=345355. You can also find the link in your Parent Portal Account. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese which are the top five languages used at home in our district.
We are looking to begin a Mentor Program at Burnette next year to help support our students. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please complete this link https://forms.gle/dtQyp51ZX3oMsnne7
If there is anything I can do to support you, please don't hesitate to reach out: 678-546-2170, sally.lehmann@gcpsk12.org.
Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Sally Lehmann

Donations Needed
Since students will be engaged in some very important assessments when we get back from Spring Break, we want to encourage as many students as possible to have perfect attendance when they are scheduled to take their assessments. To help encourage students to come to school, we want to raffle off some scooters! Any student who has perfect attendance during their assessment, their name will be entered into a raffle to win one of the scooters.
If you would like to donate a scooter, please make sure it is new and appropriate for elementary kids. New scooter donations can also be a tax write-off (we will provide you with the documentation).
We need these donations by April 10th. Thank you in advance for your help!

Media Center Updates
Hello Burnette Readers! We will have two more reading challenges this school year for our K-2 readers in March and April. Look for those reading coloring challenges in your Friday folder. Third graders can earn their Three in a Row paw by reading three books in a chapter book series (i.e., Magic Tree House, 39 Clues, Encyclopedia Brown, etc.) For grades 4-5, students have until April 28 to finish earning genre paws. Students who collect all the genre paws earn a gift certificate to our May book fair!
We will have one more book fair in May! Stock up on books to read this summer! Get ready to join us for a Bedford Falls Bookfair May 8-12! Keep an eye out in Class Dojo for volunteer opportunities and shopping times.

What’s the buzz about Social Emotional Learning (SEL)?
In Gwinnett County, we are currently following CASEL’s framework for social-emotional learning. See below for a link to a quick presentation that does a wonderful job of explaining Social Emotional Learning, the 5 competencies, and where SEL is found. Click Here for a Link to SEL Media
At Burnette Elementary we have begun the work of digging a little deeper in how these CASEL competencies can support our work with students and stakeholders through Social Emotional Learning. Do you want to incorporate SEL practices at home, click on the link for an SEL Home Activity Pack
Please use this link to access the GCPS SEL Day Website to check out even more activities and resources for Social Emotional Learning.
We want to invite you to celebrate SEL Day on March 10, 2023, by wearing a t-shirt with a positive message. For more information, click on the link Positivi-TEE Flyer.
