Unique Patton leaves her mark on Vance
Senior Unique Patton has always been an artist. She will tell you that she gets her artistic genes from her father, who she describes as a “good drawer.” The talented student has loved drawing and sketching for as long as she can remember, but with the demands of school clubs, homework, internships and school trips, Unique says she just hasn’t had the time to focus on her craft. Then she saw the Vance High School competition for students to design class t-shirts for their peers.
Unique says, although she has been “super busy,” she had to submit an entry. It would give her an opportunity to reconnect to her “childhood,” so she went to work.
She knew that her artwork would incorporate the school’s mascot, a cougar. Unique says, “I was trying to implement the mascot because we just don’t see it a lot.” Her research took her to Google. Interestingly enough, Unique’s inspiration came from a picture of a tattoo. She thought the photo would be something she could work with and change to fit her vision.
Unique describes her style as “abstract,” and says, “[Drawing] shows my expression. I don’t have to be confined to lines. [My artwork] can be whatever I want it to be.”
Once she found her inspiration, she says of her piece, “I used contour lines to darken it out.” The finished product features a prominent cougar with a piercing gaze and the words “Vance CO” written vertically to the right of mascot.
The talented student’s message behind her art, “We are on the prowl. We are Vance students.”
Unique’s original drawing will be framed and on display in the main office. She is entering her last semester as student here at Vance, but says she is delighted to leave her mark on her soon-to-be alma mater. Unique adds, “I may leave, but I will [always be [a Cougar].”
Unique, who has had the opportunity to work with artist Tom Stanley and his artwork on the Charlotte LYNX, plans to continue her studies in either fashion management or textiles. She has already been accepted to North Carolina Central University, East Carolina University, Western Carolina University, and University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
