"Say Something" Call-to-Action Week
This week SMS is participating in “Say Something” Call-to-Action Week alongside thousands of other schools across the country. Get ready to participate in weeklong activities and events that raise awareness about how to create a safer, healthier school and build a culture of looking out for one another. This year, we are focusing on how to build a community of upstanders and how to acknowledge the Trusted Adults in our school community. Let’s start our week by taking a short 5-question survey during HR today. You can find the survey on our SMS Community page. For the rest of this week, we will talk about the 3 steps “Say Something”.
Executive Skill: Emotional Control*
Developing emotional control will have a major impact on your life and the lives of your family and friends. Managing emotions will help us complete tasks and reach goals. If you have control you can enjoy life's pleasures as well as deal with life's challenges.
Where are you in the emotional control game?
Do you stay positive when homework is difficult or do you get annoyed and angry?
Do you take unexpected things in stride or do you blow a gasket if something goes wrong?
Do you let things "roll off your back" or do you get hurt or aggravated easily if you are criticized?
It takes emotional control to successfully drive a car, hold down a job, and enjoy a healthy relationship. If you thing that your emotions get the best of you, there are three suggestions.
1) Keep a personal calendar (digital or paper). If you get bothered by the unexpected, keep all of your school work, your sports and club schedules, and your family commitments in one place. You'll be caught off guard less often if you are better at planning your time.
2) Keep perspective. Life is filled with small problems. You'll be happier if you realize that someone talking behind your back is an annoyance, but not a reason to be in a funk all day. If you forget the things that are good in your life and fill your soul with the problems, you'll be heavy like a wet sponge. Don't weigh yourself down with the negative. Keep in mind the positive!
3) Visit with a school counselor to pick up other tips in understanding your emotions and keeping your cool.

Happy Feet - Happy Life
When was the last time you thought about your feet? We depend on our feet all day long as they carry us wherever we go, bearing our weight the whole time, and we cram them into shoes! And then there’s the smell - although you might have grown “nose-blind” to your own stinky feet, others around you can smell it. These workhorses deserve lots of TLC, and here’s how you can take care of them.
Wash them at least once a day, with soap and water - don’t forget between the toes!
Dry them thoroughly.
Wear socks - cotton or wool is best for keeping feet dry. And change your socks at least once a day - more often if they get wet or sweaty.
Wear proper fitting shoes, and if possible do not wear the same pair of shoes 2 days in a row. They need at least 24 hours to dry out so that bacteria does not grow.
Trim your toenails, straight across, and file rough corners with an emery board if needed. Long nails give dirt and germs a place to hang out.
Use foot products if needed. There are powders and sprays that help with foot sweat and smelly feet. You can apply moisturizer to dry feet (avoid between the toes). There are also insoles you can put in your shoes to help with odor or support.
