From the Principal's Desk
Dear Glen Grove Families,
Although our weather has been quite fickle, spring has indeed arrived, and at Glen Grove, this means working toward a strong finish to this year while also planning for the next one.
One of the most important responsibilities in which we will soon be engaging is assigning students to classes. It is the belief of Glenview District 34 and Glen Grove School that children receive the most benefit from their educational experience when in a balanced classroom setting. The following criteria is influential in creating this setting:
· Classes will be balanced by gender across a grade level
· Class size will be balanced across a grade level
· Classes will be balanced by program needs
· Classes will be balanced by academic abilities and achievement
· Classes will be balanced by social-emotional needs
· Classes will be balanced by student leadership skills, work habits, and general behavior
Creating smooth transitions for our students is one of our primary goals, and careful, thoughtful attention to placement is one way we can help accomplish this.
Spring also brings with it an array of assessments. Our students just completed the Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR). It has a new name, but it is still the official standardized assessment of the State of Illinois. IAR results will be used by the State and our District to gauge student learning against the curriculum. May 8th is the first day of our two-week window for the administration of the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) Measure of Academic Progress in reading and math, and the testing window for the benchmark Curriculum Based Measurement (CBM) in reading and math is in late May.
Please remember that although we value academic assessment results, we never lose sight of our desire to continue nurturing the social and emotional awareness and skills that are critical to a child’s development. Our April Random Acts of Kindness Week, spearheaded by our Student and Library Councils, highlighting kindness, gratitude, and service, gave our students opportunities to develop civic engagement while participating in activities that increase self-esteem and optimism. We thank you for your partnership in all of these endeavors.
Although the end of the school year seems near, we have much learning left to do and look forward to a strong finish to the 2018-2019 school year!
Respectfully,
Helena Vena

Time is Running Out
Are you doing some spring clean and you don’t know what to do with your gently used books? Please consider donating them to the book drive for Bernie’s Book Bank, a non-profit organization providing books to children in need in the Chicagoland area. The last day to donate is Monday, April 29.
Change for Change
Thank you to the many families that donated their spare change to make a BIG change in someone’s else life. The Library Council is counting all of the money in order to purchase books to donate The Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. This was made possible through Scholastic campaign, All for Books. Families can still donate at the fair simply by rounding up their purchase at the registers. Just tell the volunteers that you want to donate to All for Books. The money will be added to what the Library Council has already collected.
Scholastic Book Fair
The spring book fair is coming May 1-3. Students will visit the fair on Wednesday or Thursday with their classes. The PTA is looking for volunteers to help on those days as well as helping during the ice cream social on Thursday evening from 6-8 pm. Please consider donating an hour of your time to help. 70% of all proceeds go back to Glen Grove School. Support our school by purchasing a book at the fair. Can’t make it to the fair? Purchase books online from April 24 to May 10.

New this year, consider using eWallet. Simply set up an account, put money in it, then your child can shop the book fair. No need to worry about sending in cash.
Authors Coming Soon
Author Jennifer Nielsen will be visiting the 4th and 5th graders Tuesday, May 14, thanks to Scholastic. If your child is interested in getting a personalized sign book be on the look-out for the presale flyer in May or purchase her two titles at the book fair.
Author/illustrator Tom Watson will be visiting the third graders Wednesday, May 22, Thanks to the Book Stall. If your child is interested in getting a personalized sign book be on the look-out in May for the book order.

Attention 5th Grade Families
District policy requires that you submit a current physical and proof of immunizations before the first day of school. You can drop those forms off at the school office or the D34 Administration Center (1401 Greenwood). Make these appointments soon!
If your child does not have insurance or receives state insurance (All-Kids/Medicaid), you can attend a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile clinic to get physicals and immunizations.
These clinics will be held on May 6 at Glen Grove and May 8 at Hoffman. If you would like to make an appointment, contact Jennifer Hastings RN at jhastings@glenview34.org or 847-657-2394.
Mandatory Health Forms for 2019 - 2020 Incoming 6th Graders
Please remember that all incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to August 21, 2019. Your child will NOT be able to start school until the physical form is turned in. If your child’s health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. They will be forwarded to your child’s middle school with their health file. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hastings, Health Coordinator, at (847)657-2394. Click here for the health exam form.
