"Punctuating Quotations"
Rules for quotes
To punctuate quotations you must......
- You need to know where to put quotations.
- you need to know where to put commas.
- you need to know where to put other end marks.
Direct Quotations
- use quotation marks at the beginning and end of a direct quotation.
- use commas in your direct quotations (this will set of explanatory words)
- when your quotes use an exclamation or question mark put them inside the closed quotation.
- when your quotations or exclamation is your own. place the exclamation and quotation mark outside the closed quotations.
Indirect quotations
- quotations should not be used to set of indirect quotations.
Divided quotations
- When you have a divided quotation use quotation marks to close both parts of the quotation.
- when your quotation is divided do not capitalize the second part of the quotation UNLESS it begins a new sentence
Quotations in dialogue
- In dialogue a new paragraph and sentence begins when the speakers change
