In the library, we have been continuing to dive deeper into our “Spoken Word” Genre Tree.

The branches we have been growing are:

  • Poetry (PreK, K, 3rd, 6th)

  • Verse Poetry (1st, 4th)

  • Plays (2nd, 5th)

Activities we have been engaging in:

  • Readalouds and booktalks of example books from the genre

  • Creating body movements to discuss and review features of the genre

  • The how-to's and importance of taking notes and citing sources

  • Circulating through carousel activities to discuss the genre

  • Organizing our ideas about the genre in Mindmup

Concepts we have been engaging with:

  • What are the features of the genre branch? How can I tell something is part of the genre branch?

  • What are some examples of the genre branch?

  • How do I best use this genre branch?

  • Why would this genre branch be useful for me?

As we branch out, students reflect on various materials available to them and navigate through their options to choose materials that grow what they know!
