Cornhole for a Cause
Smithville Community in Action is hosting a Cornhole Tournament to raise money for our initiatives. This includes programming targeting vaping and mental health that are not paid for through our federal grant. We are also raising money for scholarships for our seniors. This year we are giving out $1500 to three students who have committed to live a drug, alcohol and tobacco free lifestyle.
This is where YOU come in! We would love to get teams of staff together to play in this tournament. Challenge your peers to support a great cause. See all details and registration information on the attached flyer.

Trulaske Business Academy 2022 - Applications are Open!
We are hosting our annual Trulaske Business Academy this year on June 12th-15th!
The Trulaske Business Academy was established in 2008 to serve as a pre-college summer program for underrepresented minority students interested in business. The goal of this residential program is to introduce students to the various disciplines and career opportunities within the business world, while also experiencing life on a college campus.
- Special attention is paid to the areas of accounting, finance, management and marketing, which are areas of study in our college.
- Students interact with faculty and staff from the Trulaske College of Business in a classroom setting.
- Hands-on activities and team competitions are incorporated into the lessons to help students connect the material to the real world.
- Alumni and corporate partners lead activities to help students explore career opportunities in business.
- Students are exposed to lessons about professionalism, team work, communication, and leadership skills.
Rising 11th and 12th grade underrepresented minority students are eligible to apply for the program. Applications are available now and students will be notified of their admission in mid-May. All costs of the program on campus are covered, with the only requirement being the students can get to campus.
Participants of the Trulaske Business Academy will spend a majority of their day in classroom activities facilitated by faculty, staff, and corporate representatives. Evenings are spent participating in social activities with Academy Coordinators and Counselors exploring the Mizzou campus and Columbia area.
We generally have around 40-45 students, so please ensure that the application is filled out thoroughly. Applications are due Friday, May 6th at 4pm.

Is It 'Could' or 'Couldn't Care Less'?
In an attempt to add another dubious assertion to our collection of rhetorical proclamations, we may state with absolute assurance that there are but two kinds of people in this world: those who feel very angry when someone omits a negative particle in “I couldn’t care less,” and those who don’t give such matters much thought. Is there a meaningful difference between these kinds of people, or these two phrases?
Could vs. Couldn't
We define could care less and couldn’t care less on the same page, with the single definition “used to indicate that one is not at all concerned about or interested in something.” We do not put these seemingly disparate idioms on the same page in order to save space, or so that we might cause you pain. We do it because one is simply a variant of the other, and they are used in a synonymous manner.
There is little doubt that couldn’t care less is the older form, although no one is certain where this came from. There has been speculation that it is British in origin, and that American soldiers returning from World War II brought it to these shores. While it may indeed have come from the United Kingdom, there is clear evidence that couldn’t care less was in use prior to the 1940s.
Could care less does not appear to have become a fixed variant until some time after this.
There have been numerous theories about why people began to drop the negative particle, including sarcasm, lack of education, and that the phrase simply sounds better when omitting the not. We have no firm opinion on any of these, but would like to point out that uses of could care less with the negation given elsewhere in the sentence have been around for a fairly long time.
Additionally, the uncontracted form of couldn’t care less appears to have been in use since the 19th century.
