Summer Enrichment Opportunities
Wyoming Girls' State
Girls State is a week-long session of learning about our government – on the city, county,
and state levels. It is practical application of Americanism and good citizenship. It was
developed from the idea that our youth should be offered a better perspective of the
practical operation of our government and that the individual, being an integral part of the
government, is ultimately responsible for the character and success of the government.
The American Legion Auxiliary organized the Girls State program in 1941.
Any female student in the Junior or Senior class attending school in Wyoming, including
those receiving home schooling, is eligible to attend, providing she fills out an application
expressing her desire to attend, is selected as a Delegate, and is sponsored by the
American Legion Auxiliary. The local Auxiliary Unit in Lander is Don Stough Unit #33. Once
the applications have been completed and returned to the local Unit Girls State Chairman,
interviews for the candidates will be conducted, and Delegates & Alternates will be
selected. Following training on the local level in Americanism, campaigning, bill writing,
etc., the Girls State Delegates will attend the 2021 Session of Wyoming Girls State at
Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne from June 6 – 12, 2021. All
Delegates selected must be present when Girls State officially opens and must remain until
its completion. Attending the Girls State program is a privilege. Participation in any pre-
Girls State meeting set up by the local Unit Girls State Chairman will be mandatory unless
other arrangements are made ahead of time. Delegates will be asked to report back to the
local Auxiliary Unit about their Girls State experience. If you do not feel you can fulfill these
expectations, please do not apply.
The application is due by Friday, Feb. 26.
Wyoming Boys' State
Boys’ State, one of the most prestigious leadership programs in the Nation, is a development program involving up to 200 of Wyoming’s top high school juniors (and seniors this year since it was cancelled last year). Delegates will experience living in simulated cities, electing city, county and state officials, participating in the legislature, court systems and engage in the election process. Delegates will:
- Debate legislation and policies
- Qualify for a variety of scholarships
- Compete in intramural sports
- Showcase special talents
Program presenters include the Governor, Wyoming's U.S. congressional delegation, state legislators, judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, veterans and other professionals. Delegates also learn the power of teamwork and self-motivation and develop life-long friendships. The week culminates with a trip to the State Capitol in Cheyenne, where delegates occupy the House and Senate chambers and various offices and agencies of Wyoming’s government.
Boys’ State, sponsored by Wyoming American Legion Posts and community sponsors, is provided at no charge to delegates. Three college credits are available for completing the program.
Applications are initiated online through our website. After you've entered your information, we will send you an email text version of your application indicating to submit to your counseling office or Legion Post for consideration. Submissions are due March 15, 2021.
Thank you for your interest in Wyoming Boys' State. We look forward to seeing you this summer for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
