Bluebonnet Program (grades 3-5)
The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) program has encouraged Texas children to read more, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books since 1981. Mrs. Kupersztoch was honored to be on the TBA Program Committee from 2011-2013, supporting the work of the selection committee, who carefully chooses the top 20 books to become the upcoming year’s TBA Master List.
These twenty titles (listed below) are chosen to represent a wide range of interests & reading levels for 3rd-6th graders. Therefore, not all books are appropriate for all readers, but there are books that will be a perfect fit for your 3rd, 4th or 5th grader! Make sure it’s a “just right” book for your student to read independently, or, of course, teachers, parents (or librarians!) can read any of the books aloud to their child as well.
At England, students are encouraged to read Bluebonnet books during independent reading time, homework, and for fun. There are picture books, chapter books, and even graphic novels, all available for checkout in our England Library. Our official Bluebonnet kickoff is mid-September, but students can start reading now!
In January, students who qualify to vote will be invited to the England social event of the year – the Bluebonnet Voting Party! To qualify to vote, students pass a simple online quiz – they need 6+ questions right (out of 8) to get credit for that book. Students are allowed to retest as many times as necessary.
Last year, we had 232 attendees, voting for their favorite title, enjoying snacks, and hanging out with their friends. England has a very strong Bluebonnet participation culture!
3rd graders who read 10, 4th graders who read 12, and 5th graders who read 14 books or more are invited to our famous Bluebonnet Breakfast. This special event is well-attended each year for both the food and the glory!
Handfuls of students choose to read all twenty nominees each year in order to compete in the England Battle of the Bluebonnets. This year, our England team went on to place 3rd in the district-wide Battle of the Bluebonnets held at Dell Diamond! We are all incredibly proud of our Bluebonnet Team this year!
Please encourage your student to participate in the Bluebonnet program to help them become better readers, more experienced in talking about books with friends, and to participate in these awesome opportunities in our library this fall!
