Love & Logic Parenting Pointers
In addition to asking questions and using enforceable statements, you can also give away control (but keep the control you need) by giving choices. Notice that I gave two ways besides giving choices to try first. I think choices can be overdone and many critics say Love and Logic is only all about choices and nothing else. We also need to remember to be sure we are giving two real choices and not one choice and a consequence. For example, "Pick up your toys or go to your room" is not really two choices. It's a choice and a consequence. How about saying, "You may pick up your toys one at a time or two at a time. It's up to you." You could even pick up a couple of their toys to get them started on the task and then ask them if they would like to pick up the toys by themselves or with your help? Another common pitfall when giving choices is delivering them with anger or impatience rather than with empathy. Try to deliver your choices with a magic phrase such as, "You are more than welcome to ..." or "You may..." as stated above. I also like to hear parents say, "What would be best for you? Would you like to ...?"
Choices also allow children the opportunity to think for themselves and make decisions, which are two goals most parents have for their children.
ENROLLMENT & CLASS PLACEMENT FOR 2018-2019
It is that time of year again, we are looking at student placement for the upcoming school year! If you have any specific concerns regarding the learning or social needs of your child, please put them in writing to Mrs. Wokutch and return them with your child’s enrollment packet. Requests will NOT be accepted after May 15. Please note that we do not accept a request for specific teachers. However, it is our goal to make sure the placement for your child will meet his/her individual needs.
Enrollment packets will be sent home with third and fourth-grade students the beginning of May. Parents, please go over the packets, complete (be sure to look at the back of the form also), make any necessary changes, and return to the office by May 15. Paola Middle School will send enrollment packets for the fifth graders at a later date. Due to the varied number of students that may transfer in or out of Sunflower, students will not know final class placement until enrollment on August 1.
