Magers Memo
February 17th, 2018
We do not have TRIBE TIME next week. The next TRIBE TIME is March 2nd. There was an error on the calendar. I apologize for the inconvenience.
Congratulations Traci & Kathy! Thank you for hosting our Math Team!
Traci Zay has recently been recognized by Cary Sikes for exemplifying the following component(s) of the SPS mission in their work.
- Engaging - Relevant - Personal
Recognition Details:
Traci Zay has done an outstanding job of serving as Math Club Sponsor at Sequiota. She has worked hard to ensure Sequita students were prepared for MoCTM Math Contest. Three of the students in her team moved on to the next level and will be competing on March 10 at SBU in Bolivar. In addition, Traci is giving up the first day of Spring Break to attend the contest with her students. Traci's commitment to her student is an example of providing engaging, personal and relevant experiences for SPS students. Sequiota is fortunate to have a dedicated teacher of the caliber of Traci Zay.
Katharine Roman has recently been recognized by Cary Sikes for exemplifying the following component(s) of the SPS mission in their work.
- Engaging - Relevant - Personal
Recognition Details:
Kathy Roman has done an outstanding job of working with Traci Zay as Math Club Sponsor at Sequiota this year. Her dedication to students is obvious by the hours she puts in for her students. Due in large part to her and Traci's work 3 Sequiota students will be participating in Regional Math Contest on March 10. Thanks Kathy for going above and beyond.
Great slide I read this week...The power of positive thinking is real. Negative self-talk is not healthy.
Updates & Reminders:
- As most of you know, out SPED caseload has been increasing all year. The SPED Department noticed as well and has given us some assistance for the remainder of the school year. We will have an additional .5 SPED Teacher in the mornings, who will be at Williams in the afternoon. This additional help is a substitute through Penmac who is also a certified SPED Teacher. We may be trying out a few subs to find the perfect sub for our position. Please welcome anyone who is in the SPED room!
- Please review the attachment that Nurse Pam sent out regarding reasons to send students to the nurse. I have added these to Canvas, and put the link here.
- With Spring come lots and lots of field trips! Please complete the Field Trip Form that is located on Canvas when scheduling a field trip. I have linked the form for you here. Thank you!
- We will be passing an envelope around this week if you would like to donate money or a gift card for Jennifer Gillham. If you would rather provide a meal for Jennifer, please coordinate that with Jennifer once she returns to work. I am happy to help coordinate if needed.
Hopefully, the link below works-let me know who wants to do this in morning car line! Scroll down to dance, dance, dance!
The first elementary, middle school and high school sites to reach 100% of staff and statistical significance in student collection will win a hot catered breakfast for their staff from the Innovation and Information department. Read Below!
From Blended Learning: Please take the survey!
As part of the IGNiTE teaching and learning initiative, the school district partnered with BrightBytes, an educational research and analytics organization that will help us learn more about our schools’ technology use for student learning. Beginning today, all certified staff members and all students grades 3-12 are asked to participate in a brief electronic survey. The surveys should take approximately 15 minutes to complete. Parents are also given the opportunity to complete this survey. Our goal is 100% participation in your building. The survey will be open today through March 2.
There is a single link to the survey. The participant will need to select his or her role and then site. Click here to take the survey: https://bbyt.es/TL7TC
We also recommend you share this survey through parent newsletters, Twitter and Facebook groups that you may have. Our goal with the parent survey is to get as much feedback as possible, but we will not track statistical significance with this group.
Again, thank you for your participation. This information will help to guide the digital vision for Springfield Public Schools as we work to engage students in a personal, relevant, and engaging learning environment.

Notes on MAP testing:
As you begin the practice tests for MAP at your building, be sure to allow time to review answers and elicit student strategies for solutions as a class. This is an excellent opportunity for students to be exposed to and review strategies that will help them be successful on test day (and every other day). This is also a great chance for students to reflect on their work and revise or affirm prior understanding.
Remind students of the importance of using scratch paper to solve problems and check their work when taking the test. Encourage students to do a final check when they get done with each of the questions. It is very helpful to have them fold their scratch paper into sections and label them with the question numbers so that they can go back and check their work easily.

What test taking strategies have your students been introduced to? Below are several strategies that will help students as they prepare for assessments.
The purpose of this document is to provide examples of high-quality, open-ended constructed response and selected response items to support classroom instruction and assessment aligned to the Missouri Learning Standards..
The Analytics, Accountability, and Assessment department has provided MAP Practice Forms in your school APR folders. As teachers utilize these practice forms with their students, there are additional resources they can utilize below. This will allow teachers to display the forms easily and use Google forms to practice using technology.
