North Glendale Family Update
January 30, 2022
Good morning!
I hope this finds you and yours well!
I hope you can join us for PTO on Tuesday. We will meet via zoo and you can preview our agenda here. Of note is the proposed change in the by-laws (don't tune out, this is good news!). Starting next year, our PTO will have a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion member of the Executive Board. The proposed change will be shared in the general meeting on Tuesday and voted on next month:
The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Liaison (DEI Liaison). shall be the liaison between North Glendale Equity Group and the North Glendale PTO, providing PTO a monthly report. Given this PTO acts on behalf of all students at our school, DEI Liaison will review the annual calendar of activities and budget and advise and collaborate with the NG principal, staff, and PTO with the goal of providing an equitable, inclusive lens and increasing accessibility to all. The DEI Liaison will organize one annual training or presentation for the Executive Board and/or the PTO that will aid our community in furthering our mission to foster relationships.
I am excited about this addition to our school community and offer my thanks to the PTO Executive Board for taking this step.
You can read the complete by-law doc with all proposed changes at this link.
Have a great week and please reach out if I can be of support!

Smart Watches ~ whew!
With more and more kids arriving at school with some form of smart watch, we are seeing an uptick in distractions.
We understand that "Smart Watches" can provide peace of mind. They are fine at school as long as they do not become a distraction. As noted in the NG Daily Logistis document (every week via the Sunday Update) kids should not be texting or calling from these during the day, even to parents. Kids know our routines for getting help from their teachers or Nurse Pam. Smart watches may be worn if not distracting or teachers will ask kids to put them in their backpack until the end of the day.
If your student wears a smart watch, please remind them of expectations and appropriate use. Thanks for your help with this.
Black History Month
We use two questions to guide our planning for BHM:
- •What opportunities does BHM provide for NG kids and staff?
- •How will students be changed/impacted by BHM?
One of our opportunities this month is to introduce kids to a wonderful new book:
The ABC's of Black History.
This beautifully illustrated book highlights a journey through the alphabet of Black history and culture. Letter by letter, The ABCs of Black History celebrates a story that spans continents and centuries, triumph and heartbreak, creativity and joy.
