CDS Middle School
Weekly Newsletter
April 5th, 2019
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
This week our Spring Co-curricular clubs (CCs) and After School Programs (ASPs) had a successful kickoff. Both students and teachers are energized by the change and I hope everyone is happy with the choices they made.
On Wednesday 4/3 we sent each of you an SMS with a link to the Parent Teacher Conference reservation form. Remember that the booking window closes on Thursday 4/11-- one day before the conference on Friday 4/12. Please remember to make your reservations before then. If the teacher you hope to visit is fully booked we would be happy to help you schedule an appointment for another day. I encourage all parents to show up on PTC day so we can work together to support your child's growth.
Please check out the rest of this week's MS Newsletter for Adventure Korea updates, advice on how to get the most out of Parent Teacher Conferences, information about the Silent Art Auction, a selective Youth Leadership Conference, a summary of the 5th and 7th grade field trip to the botanical gardens, and other highlights and happenings in CDS Middle School.
8th Graders: Don't miss the opportunity to learn more about CDS High School by attending the 8th Grade HS Orientation with your parents in the Small Theater on Thursday, April 11th from 4:00 to 5:00pm.
Have a great weekend!

International Youth Leadership Conference
Don't miss this opportunity to develop your leadership skills and learn from an amazing keynote speaker! CDS can only send 5 students, so if you want to attend you need to explain WHY you are the best person to represent CDS in terms of your leadership potential. (See details and application form below).
On behalf of the Korea Council of Overseas Schools (KORCOS), we are excited to invite your school to participate in the 2019 International Youth Leadership Conference, or IYLC, being held on May 25th, 2019 at Chadwick International (CI).
The 2019 IYLC will bring together youth leaders from international and local schools around Korea - and potentially beyond - for a learning and intensive day of leadership training and community service. This year the conference theme is: Lead to Serve: Serve to Lead, and it will have as keynote speaker Elijah Christopher DeVaughn, Jr.
The 2019 International Youth Leadership Conference hopes to bring together over 200 young people to work on developing leadership skills and to encourage them to bring back the ideals of community service to their respective communities. The lessons, speeches, and workshops in which the students will participate will all focus on this year’s theme: Lead to Serve: Serve to Lead.
The keynote speakers will speak to the students about their experiences as youth leaders and about their involvement in working to improve the issues facing their communities. Students will also have a chance to present their projects and share their stories; call for presentations will be out in the beginning of April.

Silent Art Auction 4/8 - 4/12
Dear CDS Community
You are cordially invited to our 6th Annual Silent Art Auction, which will be held next week Monday, April 8th - Friday, April 12th. We will be raising funds for ‘Teach North Korean Refugees (TNKR) ) which is a small organization that we have supported in the auction for the last two years.
We are working to help support their work with N. Korean refugees and their various educational and counseling programs by selling artwork that has been created and donated by our wonderful students (and staff)! 100% of the proceeds go to TNKR.
This event will run as a ‘silent auction’ and you will have a chance to purchase art work from CDS FP, MS, & HS students and teachers that range in material and size! The work will be on display all week, and you can bid at any time.
There is a formal bidding book in the main lobby near the artwork; each piece of artwork has an assigned number, and you can flip through the book to find the bidding sheet. On there you can write down your information and the price you are willing to pay- each piece has a base starting bid, so please check first, and often!
Please note, historically this does get competitive ;-) So, if there is a piece you want, keep an eye on it lest you are outbid!
[Anyone can buy artwork at this event- parents, other students, teachers, staff]
If you are the highest bidder, you will be notified the following week. The artwork(s) will be ready to be picked up starting the following Wednesday, April 16th. Please note that it is NOT allowed to take your purchased artwork on the auction day due to inventory purpose.
Feel free to ask any of the art teachers for questions about the event.
Sincerely,
Ms. Pantano, Ms. Koetje, and Mr. Read
Spanish Creative Writing Contest
Creations will be showcased to inspire other members of our community and celebrate students’ success and hard work. Furthermore, this competition provides an excellent opportunity to help students’ college applications shine by providing a broader image of the participants' abilities in languages. The due date for submissions is April 18, we can’t wait to read all your stories!

[This week, around CDS MS]
Chinese Vocal Music Festival
Besides of introducing the Chinese folk song, participants of 7th and 8th grade also performed the most famous songs such as Sweets As Honey ( Tian Mi Mi) and I Love My Family (wo ai wo de jia). Many of our students not only have learned some of famous Chinese songs and culture, but their pronunciation also improved a lot though Chinese Vocal Music Festival.

Science class with Mr. Howell
Students were divided into teams and each member was given a specific role and responsibility to carry out during the whole process. The classroom turned into a full-fledged workshop with cutting, molding, gluing, and painting going on all over the place.
With the rockets finally completed this week, we decided to test launch them out on the soccer field. Most were successful and managed to reach considerable heights. There were a few malfunctions, however, which was quite disappointing for some teams. Nonetheless, we learned a great deal in the process and had a lot of fun along the way.

Grade 5 & 7's Field Trip to Seoul Botanic Garden
Students were able to showcase their skills in observation, plant identification, scientific naming, and the use of other biological concepts that they have learned in life science and general science this year.
Many students brought back seeds from the seed library that they will be growing at home or in their science classrooms. We may soon see seedlings emerging from the soil and growing along with these brilliant young students!
