Principal's Note...
This newsletter features some really interesting activities that took place this week at MMES. Below you will find photos of a project Mrs. Decker's class did where they completed an oversized jigsaw puzzle of a map of the world. It was so cool to see each of the students play a role in planning and executing the build of this map! We always love when the teachers are able to bring the learning outside of the classroom into the lobby for all to enjoy! Be sure to also check out the article written by a few students about an engineering design challenge they accomplished thanks to the Spaulding Foundation's support...very cool!
A few dates are coming in hot off the presses! Mother Nature called and promised me no more snow days (hooray for baseball season!). The dates for Hit the Street for Little Feet, the MERSD Art Show, and the Grade 5 Crossing the Bridge ceremony (pending no more snow days) have all been set. See below
Have a great weekend!
Best,
John

Mathematics Explorers and Problem Solvers (written by Isabelle, Nicholas, and Leigh)
We had a challenge, to make an inclined plane for an injured elderly women who needed a wheelchair ramp to climb the few stairs to her house. We had a budget of $120, each block being $2. We also had to have a mechanical advantage of at least 4:1. The height was 4 and the length must be 4 times that, and this helps the work of getting up the incline easier. The ramp had to have a safety rail, as well as being wide enough for the wheelchair. We made a pulley system, and added the challenge that other people have to be able to get up the ramp and through the arc at the top, used for the pulley. We used these pulleys to help her get into her house without having to apply much effort. We also added hitches so she could tie off the rope to the top or bottom of the ramp so she doesn’t have to ever reset the weights. It took a lot of EFFORT to stay on task and not give up even when it got challenging. We also had to have RESPECT for the other members of our team and the Rokenbok blocks, and RESPONSIBILITY with the blocks as well. At the end of the project, we felt a large amount of satisfaction with our work, and happiness with what we accomplished.

Help Wanted!
We are currently searching to bolster our substitute pool for the 17-18 school year. Many of our favorite substitutes have secured full-time jobs recently (hooray for them), and we need to "restock our bullpen." Do you know someone locally who has experience working with children in a school setting? Please have them email Mrs. Dodge directly at dodgec@mersd.org and we can take them through the application and screening process. Thanks so much in advance!
