African Americans have always been discriminated, even when they were free from slavery. When they earned their suffrage, they were finally equal to everyone else.

There are many court cases involving Black suffrage; one of the main ones were Gillespie vs. Palmer.
Obstacles
African Americans had to go through racism, slavery and many other things. There were many protests that took place for black suffrage.
The 15th Amendment
In 1867, this amendment was passed. It stated the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. It allowed African Americans to vote.
