Principal's Message

Good afternoon Jesmond Public School community,

Welcome to Week 5.

Swimming Carnival Postponement

Due to the wet weather conditions today our Swimming Carnival has been postponed until tomorrow Thursday 23rd February 2023.

A new permission note was sent home today and will need to be signed and returned to school by tomorrow morning.

Pizza and Parent Information Night

Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our Pizza Parent Information Night. It was wonderful to see so many families meeting their child's class teacher and engaging in the school community. The night focused on teaching and learning. Classroom teachers presented information about school expectations, units of work and levels of communication. Please see class teachers if you did not receive a handout regarding class organisations etc.

School Photos

School photos have been rescheduled until Term 2 due to NAPLAN. They have been booked for Wednesday 31st May 2023.

Nomination of Sports Captains

Every year, students in Year 6 have the opportunity to nominate themselves to be a house captain. Both Paterson and Hunter house have two captains each that lead the rest of the school in sport related activities and events. This year there were lots of students who nominated themselves and spoke in front of their house telling them why they would make a good house captain.

Students from Years 3-6 voted for one boy and one girl captain. The following students were voted as our house captains at Jesmond Public School for 2023.

Hunter: Idris and Maymunah

Paterson: Knox and Sara

There will be a special presentation at one of our whole school assemblies, in the coming weeks, where our new Hunter and Paterson house captains will receive their badges.

Student Representative Council

Our Student Representative Council (SRC) is comprised of two students from each class. Students have recently completed voting processes to elect their class representatives for Semester 1.

The SRC will meet on a monthly basis to discuss and organise school fundraising projects as well as provide opportunities for students to have their voice heard on issues which affect them. SRC representatives will communicate information to their classmates through regular class meetings.

Our SRC representatives for Semester 1 are:

Links to the online Expression of Interest (EOI) and Placement Not Required (PNR) forms will be available on this page from 6 March – 31 March 2023. More information will be communicated in the next few weeks.

Cross Country Carnival

As part of our whole school sporting program we will be running our Cross Country event on Wednesday 8th March, 9:30am - 12:30pm. All school students, from Kindergarten to Year 6, will take part in events on the day. Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 who do NOT turn 8 years old this year will remain at school with their classroom teachers and participate in an organised K-2 Cross Country event between 9:30am -10:30am. Those students eligible to compete in the cross country race who are turning 8 this year or older may be selected to compete at the Newcastle City Zone Cross Country Championships to be held on Friday 28th April.

Children are expected to wear joggers, school uniform and a school hat. Students should apply sunscreen before coming to school and bring their own insect repellent. Children will also need to bring their lunch and drinking water.

In the event that the Cross Country has to be postponed due to unfavourable weather conditions on the day, classes will continue as per normal. Under these circumstances the Cross Country will be rescheduled to be held on Friday 10th March.

Parents, carers and family members are welcome to attend on the day to watch their child race. Permission notes will be sent home next week.

Have a wonderful week!

Premier's Reading Challenge

Big picture

The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is open to all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9. Teachers will record books read for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year.2. Students in Years 3-6 will need to record the books they read themselves. If assistance is required, please see Mrs Beatty or Mr Fowler.

You can also find support on the PRC website: prc@det.nsw.edu.au

Good luck and enjoy your reading.
