NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL FAMILY LITERACY MONTH!
November is the month in which we bring awareness to the importance of reading in the home. Children who are read to when very young tend to associate reading with fun and love. This month is a great time to start a new tradition of reading as a family. “By engaging multiple generations, learning is taken beyond the classroom and becomes part of families’ everyday lives,” says Emily Kirkpatrick, Vice President of the National Family for Family Literacy. “This leads to greater achievements and builds momentum for lifelong learning as it helps to develop real-world skills for people trying to better their lives and communities" (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/elianne-ramos/national-family-literacy-month_b_2066057.html).
Here are some ways you can promote family literacy at home:
- Put aside time each day for reading.
- Keep books visible around the house.
- Read the book version of your child’s favorite movie.
- Visit the library.
- Organize a children’s book club with friends in the neighborhood.
- Model reading, and talk about what you're reading.

STUDENT PICKS
Reviewer: Saoirse N.
This book is about four girls who babysit and they have to deal with tough situations when they babysit. There are bratty kids, school troubles, and home troubles to deal with. I like that I can relate to how they feel because I can understand how it might be hard for them to juggle all of the school and home stuff and babysitting. Some parts of the book are funny and I like the pictures since it's a graphic novel. I read other books in the series and I liked them.
I would recommend this book to fourth grade and up. It would be easier for those students to understand and relate to the book.
STAFF PICKS
Reviewer: Mr. Ray Sawyer
Morpheus Road is a very well-written, mysterious book about Marsh, a comic book artist who ends up fighting for his life after one of his creations comes to life. After the destruction of a mysterious artifact gifted to him by his mother, the vengeful Gravedigger comes off the page and into our world. Marsh must do everything he can to avoid and outsmart the creature that is now after him.
This book had a lot of details for some, but the writer did keep it interesting and kept the mystery alive throughout the book. It has some scary moments, like a more mature version of Goosebumps. I would recommend this book to ages 10 and up. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series!
