The Roadrunner
Ben Franklin Elementary School
February
Dear Families,
Thank you to the families who have recognized a staff member by sending in the Recognized Staff Member card. There are additional cards in the office if you have others you would like to recognize. The children are pretty excited when they drop the cards off to us in the office~ keep them coming!
As the Principal of the school, I can not say THANK YOU enough to the staff members who assist in the turn lane every day just to ensure all of our students are safe (despite the freezing cold temperatures). It is pretty amazing to witness every day! If everyone follows the turn lane guidelines, the traffic moves smoothly. When being waved forward by our safety patrol, please pull forward. Stopping in the drive-thru lane backs traffic up on 11th street (which leads to blocked crosswalks). Thank you for your continued efforts to make our turn lane safe.
With Valentine's Day approaching we want to remind everyone that Ben Franklin is a peanut/tree nut restricted school. If you are planning to send a treat for Valentine's, please be cautious and read the labels. The classroom teacher will provide families with a valentine list.
2020-2021 Kindergarten Registration
We are excited to see you on March 12th as we prepare for your student’s kindergarten year at Grand Forks Public Schools! In order to help better prepare for your arrival at Kindergarten Registration, we would like you to take a few minutes to complete our online Pre-Registration form. This Google Form (http://bit.ly/Kindergarten2020) will allow us to capture information so we can begin your student’s enrollment now and cut down your waiting time at school that day.
Giving Hearts
Can our Grand Forks Public Schools students count on you on Giving Hearts Day? We are raising funds to ensure a seat on the bus, at the lunch table, and in the classroom for our students in need. Donate to the Grand Forks Foundation for Education on February 13 at givingheartsday.org and help us ensure they have a seat. Gifts of $10 or more will be matched thanks to the generous funding of Rydell Cars. #SecureASeat #GFSchools #GivingHeartsDay
Please read the attachment for more information.

PTO News
Thank you Roadrunner families for joining us at our most recent Dine to Donate event held at the Applebee’s. With your help we were able to raise $182.30! It is always wonderful to see everyone outside of school. We hope to see you at our next event on February 19, 5 - 9pm, at Ely’s Ivy downtown.
The wait is coming to an end… Spring Coupon Books will be sent home the week of February 17th. Information about the fundraiser and coupon books will be sent home at the start of that week. If you have sold all five of your books and would like to pick up more, you can speak with Mrs. Weiland in the office after the fundraiser begins.
There has been a slight modification to our Dine to Donate schedule. In March, Half Brothers would like to fundraise every Tuesday from 6 - 9pm with $1 from every food/drink item purchased by all patrons. A list of dates will be sent home towards the end of the month.
With the days becoming longer we are starting to think warm thoughts in PTO. Join us for our next meeting on March 9th as we address many topics including our Spring Event!

See Something, Say Something
Statistics consistently show that schools are among the safest places to be due to the strong commitment of educators, families, and our community to our students and schools. We strive to be proactive rather than reactive.
Despite these proactive measures, there may be times when your student struggles socially, academically, or otherwise at school. There may be a time you/your student sees, hears, or is made aware of something that causes concern. In these circumstances, we would like you to remember the phrase, “See Something, Say Something.”
Please directly contact your student’s teacher, counselor, or administrator when a school-related concern arises that requires intervention or assistance. The phone number to our school office is 701-746-2250.
If there is a safety concern after school hours, on the weekend, or when school is not in session (ex: holiday break, summer break), contact the Grand Forks Police Department (GFPD) at 701-787-8000. To text an anonymous tip to the GFPD, text GFPD to 847-411.
If it is an immediate concern, call 911.
Please do not use social media (ex: Facebook, Instagram, etc.) as a forum to share these concerns. Individual privacy settings may inhibit emergency responders and school administrators from seeing these messages, making them unable to assist.
We care about each of our students and work hard each day to support their needs. Thank you for your efforts in keeping our students, employees, and community safe.
Sincerely,
Leslie Bjelde
