KITCHEN STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK

I’m not sure where we’d be without the hard work of Ms. Kondratyuk and Ms. Stoneham. They work hard every day to make sure that Brookdale students have a healthy breakfast and lunch. They serve hundreds of meals each week, taking care to make sure that students have everything they need to be nourished so they can do their best work in the classroom. We thank our kitchen staff for their important work at Brookdale.

PICTURE DAY ~ OCTOBER 13

PICTURE DAY – Individual pictures will be taken for all students on Thursday, October 13. Picture envelopes and pre-pay information was sent home with each student on Wednesday, September 28th. Please take the time to read the information and to select your picture package option.

Please remember these important picture day requirements.

  • Each student will need their own picture envelope on picture day. All students will be photographed even if they are not buying a package.
  • QSP Photography & Brookdale do not have change. Please send the correct amount in each of of your children’s envelopes. Make checks payable to QSP Photography.
  • Portraits will be combined into the same envelope even if a student turns in multiple order envelopes. Please order direct from QSP if this is a foreseeable issue. If you call QSP at 1-877-697-6996, they will arrange shipping directly to your address.
  • We have scheduled pictures for younger than school-age children, and students that are absent on picture day for November 15, which is our retake day.
  • All portraits are printed on a prepayment system. Online ordering is available where credit cards will be accepted. Please go to www.qualityschoolportraits.com to order portraits online. You must type in the school code of BR0022 and order by 9pm prior to photo day.
  • Please do not wear green

HEALTH SCREENING DAY

Students K-3 and 5th grade will have their vision and hearing screened at school on Tuesday, October 25. If your child has glasses or contact lenses, please be certain they are wearing them on screening day. Referrals to a health care provider will be sent home with the students who do not pass the vision screening. We will re-screen students who do not pass hearing, before sending a regerral home. If you have any questions, please call our nurse, Sierra Rambow, at 253-298-3108.

NEXT WEEK IS BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION WEEK

Our bus drivers safely and faithfully transport hundreds of students to and from school each day. Anyone who has driven a car full of children can appreciate how challenging it is to drive a school bus packed with energetic students. Please join us in thanking your child's bus driver this week for all of their hard work. We also want to thank the wonderful staff in the Transportation Dept. for working so hard to coordinate all the logistics getting students to and from school in a safe, timely manner.

Brookdale Family Resource Handbook

This year the Brookdale Family Resource Handbook will only be available electronically. You can access it through our website or through this link – Family Resource Handbook. The handbook provides families with lots of important information about Brookdale - attendance policies, dress codes, handling behavior concerns, and volunteering, plus so much more! Once you have received the handbook, please complete the survey – Receipt of Family Resource Handbook – letting us know you received a copy.

PARENTS OF STUDENTS IN GRADES K -2

Please pack an extra pair of clothes, including underwear, socks, and pants in your child’s backpack. Accidents do happen and we would like to be prepared. It is nice when a child can wear a pair of his or her own pants. The health room has a very limited supply of clothing. If your child does borrow clothing from the health room, please return the clothing items to the school after it is washed.

FALL WEATHER IS HERE!

We are enjoying our beautiful Fall weather which means that mornings can be cooler. It is also important to remember that students go outside for recess rain or shine. Be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather. Please take a moment to label outer-wear with a permanent marker in case it is misplaced.

STUDENT ABSENCES

In order to assure your child's safety, please call the school office at 253-298-3100 if your child is ill or unable to attend school. You can call and leave a message on our 24-hour voice mail if it is before school hours. If your child is not in attendance, and we do not receive a call from you by 10:05 a.m, we will attempt to call you to confirm the reason for the absence. Your phone call saves time for the office and is greatly appreciated!

Fall has hit our Bobcats hard. If you are wondering whether or not your child is too sick to attend school, please refer to the link below.

EMERGENCY DRILLS

As you know, we are required to conduct emergency drills throughout the school year. We do this in an effort to prepare students as best we can for what to do in the event of an emergency. Even though we tell students that the activity is a drill, it can still be scary for some students. If students come home talking about a drill (fire, earthquake, lockdown, or other) please remind them how important it is to practice these so that we can all be safe. Families will always be notified in the event of an actual emergency. Thanks for your help with this!

BUS PROCEDURES

We have a very helpful transportation department; if you have any questions, issues about something that happened on the bus or at the bus stop, or concerns about a late bus, please call the transportation office directly at 253-298-3865. To cut down on the number of calls received in the office daily we are asking that if you wish for your child to ride a bus other than the one they normally ride, get off at a bus stop other than their normal stop, to be a parent pick-up, you must send a note. Without a note, we will not allow students to change their regular bus, bus stop, or end of the day routine.

IMPORTANT SCHOOL REMINDERS

STUDENT EARLY DISMISSAL – If your child has an appointment and is leaving before the end of the school day, please make sure you send a note that morning letting the teacher and the office know. Also, please allow enough time for pick up. To preserve precious class time, we do not call students to the office until you have checked them out in person (remember your ID).

SCHEDULE CHANGES - The end of the day at Brookdale is very hectic. If you forgot to send a note in the morning (which is preferred) and need to call the school with a change to your child’s schedule, please do so before 3:15 p.m. After 3:15 the office is busy assisting students and parents and will not be able to answer your call or get a message to a student before they leave for the day. All end of the day schedule changes must be made through the office, not with the classroom teacher. Thank you!

UPDATE CONTACT INFORMATION - If any of your information has changed (address, contact info., email address, etc.) please contact the office right away. This year more than ever, it will be important to have the most current information. Also, let us know what your preferred method of contact is - phone, email, text. You can reach the office at 253.298.3100.

COMMUNICATION…HOW DO FAMILIES KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING AT BROOKDALE?

There are a number of ways that we keep families informed of the exciting things happening at Brookdale.

  • The Brookdale Bobcat Prints is published bi-monthly and sent to your email account. This newsletter lets you know what’s coming up, with some articles of information.
  • The Sunday night phone call from the principal. This message keeps families up to date with important information, not to mention what is happening during the week.

To keep informed we must have a current phone number and email address on record for your family. If you are not receiving these communication, please call our school office at 253.298.3100 and we will be happy to assist you.
