Cougar Connect Community Edition
October 24 - November 4
Principal Arellano's Post
Greetings Cougar Families!
We are so lucky to have the community we do at King. We know our students are the future, and we work hard daily to ensure we are preparing them to be FUTURE Ready. Our students have been working hard all year. I have had the pleasure of working alongside many of them this week, and I am blown away at their capacity to collaborate and critically think.
As we prepare for our fall Showcase, it is important for you to ask them about their projects. Ask them about the driving question they have centered their project on and what they have learned thus far.
Please be sure to look for communication coming via Remind from our school and your student's teacher. We communicate important information weekly. If you are having trouble accessing your Remind app, please call the front office. Teachers have sent conference schedules to families. Please be sure to schedule a conference with your student's teacher. This is a time for teachers and school staff to connect, partner, and communicate regarding your student's progress in school.
Please keep an eye on your student's lunch account balance. If you have concerns, please reach out to our Cafeteria Manager, Mrs. Coll. Call the front office and we can transfer your call.
The link for online lunch payments is attached. Your child's student ID number will be on their profile page that you sign off on in the classroom when you meet the teacher. Cash or check can be accepted at the school.

As always, please reach out to your student's teacher or myself with questions or concerns. We hope that you have had an amazing week!
We are noticing a need to focus on our ROARS matrix. Our current focus is on Respect. Please discuss with your student the importance of respect both in and out of school. Ask them how they demonstrate respect at school. Ask them how others respect them at school. I have embedded our Matrix for your review. We utilize our matrix to help students grow in their ability to be learner focused and grow their capacity for responsible citizenship.
Habits of Success Focus
October 3- Nov 4
Empathy
Empathy in students looks like the ability to:
Identify the thoughts and feelings someone else may experience, be experiencing, or have experienced in a given situation.
Try on someone else's perspective, point of view, or felt experience.
Identify and respect others' preferences in an interaction.
Be willing to lean into conflict while maintaining respect and compassion.
Build positive relationships with peers and trusted adults.
Please read the article, linked below to read up on how you can cultivate the skill of empathy in your student. Future Ready students will need to develop soft skills that will help them to navigate a world yet imagined.

Dinner Table Prompts:
We encourage you to discuss your student's day at school as a family. Below are some questions that you can ask your students to help generate conversation centered on empathy and relationships.
- How do you welcome new students into your class? Do you do something special to help them feel welcomed?
- Who did you play with at recess? How are you helping others who may feel lonely feel included? Do you ever feel lonely?
- You see that your table partner is having a hard time during partner work. How can you support them?
- Your friend came to school very upset. How would you support them?
- You are trying to explain how you solved a math problem to your table group, but one of your partners keeps interrupting you. How do you handle this situation?
- You are in gym class and learning how to dribble the basketball. Everyone seems to be mastering the skill but you are having a really hard time. How do you handle the situation?

Staff Recognition
April Perkins - French/King
April Perkins is an outstanding Literacy Coach for French Elementary. She goes beyond each and every day for our students and our staff. She is an amazing educator who continues to support each of of us, even when she is splitting her time at King. She is always positive and encouraging. She has a wealth of knowledge that makes her a perfect coach!! She writes teacher friendly instructions for READ plans and even writes some of them to help us!! On top of her work load, she takes time to research and implement reading apps that benefit all of our students during independent work time. We are so fortunate to have April as a Literacy Coach and as a truly, valued colleague.
4th grade Team - King Elementary
Our 4th grade team takes on the job of educating our students while smiling and teaching with excellence! They work together and deliver some fantastic academics as well as prepare the kids for their project-based learning showcases coming up soon! It has been a great first quarter thanks to their hard work and dedication. Special thanks for all their help supporting Mrs. Goolsby at the music concert on October 4th. They helped kids line up, settle their nerves and get focused for an amazing performance! We are so lucky to have a great team charting the course for our 4th graders!
