European Day of Languages
Year 1 Learn French
Bonjour! For European Day of Languages, Year 1 have been learning and practising French. With France having the largest number of French speakers in the world, we also learnt some facts about France, constructed our own versions of the Eiffel Tower, and looked at the colours of the flag before having a go at producing our own, using a wide range of materials.
In science we are learning about the body and the senses so we learnt the names of some body parts in French, leading onto a beautiful rendition of Heads Shoulders Knees and Toes, en Francais!
In art we are perfecting our colour mixing technique and created some lovely rainbows, which we then labelled in French with the colours we had learnt.
C'etait un très bon jour!
Year 6 Go Greek
Yiasoo from Year 6
Year 3 learn about the Ukraine
Year 2 learn about Poland and polish with Kacper
Year 2 were very excited about Poland being our country to study for European Day of Languages, especially as one of their classmates is Polish! Everyone was dressed in red and white to represent the Polish flag and looked great. The children learned about where Poland is on the map compared to the UK, and had a go at identifying it by the shape of the country. We were able to look at the beautiful Polish landscapes and city-scapes and we learned the name of the Polish prime minister: Mateusz Morawiecki. Our classmate Kacper told us a bit about his life in Poland, and helped us to pronounce some Polish words! Year 2 matched these English sentences to how they are said in Polish, and we learned how to say them. We worked on our pronunciation all day thanks to Kacper!
Hello! Goodbye. How are you? I am fine. Thank you!
We even answered the register in Polish and got a class photo of us all in our red and white.
Year 4 learn about German
Year 4 had a lovely day celebrating the fascinating and wonderful German language. During the day, they answered the register in German and greeted each other with their best German pronunciation. They were keen to share their love for languages and their knowledge of this amazing language.
In the afternoon, they used some simple consonant changes to understand and translate some German words. They had great fun doing this 'mini quiz' and thoroughly enjoyed looking at how similar German and English are.
After this, they headed outside to find the 14 words scattered around the school grounds. Using only a map, they found the vocabulary and used synonyms of the English words to work out the German. Hund = hound or dog and Volk = folk or people were just two of these. Ein wunderbarer Tag!
Spanish in the Early Years
NurseryHola! In Nursery our chosen language for European Day of Languages was Spanish . We were all super busy painting the Spanish flag, learning to count to 5 in Spanish, we were singing Spanish songs and we listened to a traditional children's story in Spanish. In the afternoon we were putting our cooking skills to the test, we all helped in the preparation and cooking of the traditional Spanish dish of paella. The children thought it was delicious! Adios.
What a super morning of Spanish fun and learning was had in Reception. Not only did we learn to greet each other in Spanish, but we also sang Spanish number songs and learnt to count to 10 too! We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the famous Spanish painter, Picasso, and made some Picasso inspired artwork. We particularly enjoyed using brightly coloured playdough to make portraits, and also cut up and rearranged our own self-portraits causing much hilarity! Some traditional guitar music was just what we needed to relax at the end of the day, so we made our own guitars and created our Reception Spanish guitar band. Adios!

Each class thought about a promise that they could make which we shared in our Friday Zoom worship.

Year 5 explore science through Forest Schools
Year 5 have had great fun learning practically in their Forest School sessions. They learned about solutions and explored solubility and insolubility of a range of natural and everyday materials.
The children also made their own blackberry ink, experimenting with how changing the number of dissolved blackberries affects the strengths of their ink solution.
