Greene Notes
News & Notices from Team Tigers
From the Superintendent
Thank you to all the staff members who will be giving up a portion of your Spring Break to facilitate Spring Intersession and continue addressing the learning loss caused by the pandemic. Recent research suggests that extending the school year through intersessions and summer school along with implementing high-dosage tutoring will be crucial to helping close the learning gap for our students most affected by the past year's disruption to their education.
Enjoy the break; I hope it is a safe, restful, and peaceful one.

Classroom Spotlight: Marketing and Entrepreneurship with Mrs. Mize at GCHS
The Tigers’ Den store is up and running with Mrs. Kati Mize’s Marketing & Entrepreneurship students. The store is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during each of the three lunch periods. Store offerings have been researched by students, and they are coming up with new items frequently. In the Tigers’ Den you can find spirit shirts (short-sleeve, long-sleeve, and hoodies), masks, headbands, wristbands, snacks, drinks, water bottles, and much more. In addition to selling to students and staff during lunches, these students also operate a school-based apparel printing business that is located within the Tigers’ Den. Students design and make shirts, bags, and other apparel for various groups including sports teams, clubs, local businesses, church groups, and more.
During class when the store is not open, entrepreneurship students are learning all about starting a business and are working on ideas to start their own business. These future entrepreneurs recently had the opportunity to have a Google Meet with local entrepreneur, Kari Chitwood. Kari and her husband, Derek, started Empire South and Peach State Pride, both based out of Watkinsville. During her talk Kari told how they got started with their business, challenges they have faced, and gave advice for students who plan to open their own business.
School Nutrition News
Additionally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended nationwide waivers that allow all Greene County students to continue to receive meals from the GCSS Nutrition Department at no cost through September 30, 2021. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

Continuing Education Opportunity for Certified Staff
Piedmont College specializes in bringing graduate programs to schools using a Cohort model. They are now offering their off-campus cohorts fully online. The classes give you an opportunity to meet together in an online environment and/or to work independently.
They have two delivery options, synchronous and asynchronous, so that you can choose the best option for your schedule. All instructors hold terminal degrees (Ed.D., Ph.D.) and are either full time faculty from Piedmont, or real, live practitioners from schools and school districts.
Piedmont wants the work to be highly context-specific and applicable. Classes for the M.A. and Ed.S. will begin in the summer and fall 2021 semesters. Please see the links below if you are interested in joining one of the school's Zoom informational meetings to learn more.
