Competency Recovery Days
January 23 and 24 will be competency recovery days at Hillsboro-Deering High School. January 23rd will be an A-day and January 24th will be a B-day. Students will follow and early release schedule on these days. Students in good academic standing, which means, they are not failing any courses will be allowed to leave school at 12:10 p.m. The lunch period is 11:40-12:10 p.m. Students can leave at 11:40 a.m. if they choose not to stay for lunch. All students are responsible for transportation if they are in good academic standing and wish to leave school after regularly scheduled academic day is completed.
Students not in good academic standing will be scheduled into the classes they are failing from 12:10-2:10 p.m.
Any student(s) not failing that must stay at school and wait for the bus at 2:10 p.m. will have multiple activities they can choose to attend during the competency recovery period.
The end of semester competency recovery period does not guarantee a student shall pass; they should continue to use the late work policy and competency recovery guidelines to work on their grades as we approach the end of the semester.
Costa Rica April 2024!
Dear Hillsboro-Deering families,
Exciting news! Your high school student is invited to join us on a once-in-a-lifetime international travel experience with their peers to Costa Rica in April 2024!
Educational travel exposes students to new people, places, and cultures which in turn expands their knowledge of the world and their knowledge of themselves. That’s why I’m thrilled to bring this opportunity to your family and our community. This trip will fill up fast, so please reach out to Shannon Chagnon at schagnon@hdsd.org for more information.

Winter Carnival 2023
It’s the most wonderful time of the year…
Winter Carnival is right around the corner. Hillsboro-Deering High School is preparing for its annual competition. Each grade competes against each other in a four-way event, with numerous challenges and activities in which each grade earns winter carnival points. At the end of Winter Carnival, the grade with the most points is deemed Winter Carnival Champions.
Each class presents 5 champions. These champions partake in challenges in front of the entire school. The first Winter Carnival champion event will be on Wednesday, December 22.
During the 2021-2022 school year the Junior class of 2023 were deemed Winter Carnival champions after a very close battle, with the Sophomore class of 2024. The Freshman class of 2025 were stuck with the Freshman curse of last place. The new Freshman class of 2026 are looking to break that curse!

Extended Learning Opportunities
January is ELO Month in New Hampshire! An Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) is a unique experience that allows students to earn high school credit for learning that takes place outside of the traditional classroom. This could be in the form of private lessons, independent studies, job shadows/internships, conferences, and more. It all starts with a student’s passion and we develop an educational experience from there. Interested in learning more about ELO possibilities? Reach out to our ELO Coordinator, Katelyn Cashorali kcashorali@hdsd.org or your student’s school counselor today.

H-DHS Student Leadership
On Thursday, December 8, the executive council of Student Government attended a CARE conference (Community Actions Resulting in Experiences) at New England College. The college was planned and led by students in the SWOCO organization at Kearsarge High School (Students Working on Community Outreach.) The essential question of the conference was What Defines a Leader? Students and adult break out groups discussed ways to put leadership into action while getting involved in the school and outside communities. Topics were how to get organized, fundraise, find an engaging role for each member and generally, enjoy yourself while doing good. We also learned about other student-led conferences and made meaningful connections for starting and/or enlivening programs at Hillsboro Deering High School.
The student leaders and advisors were very impressed with the conference. They met this past week to debrief and make an action plan for implementing the ideas inspired by the conference.
