We are finally starting to stick to warmer weather! Some exciting and fun things will be happening at the Extension Office here in these next few months. Be sure to check this newsletter often, as new things will be added weekly.

Horse ID Forms & District Entries
- Districts and State Horse Entries Due May 7, 2021
- Horse ID forms are due to the county office by May 7, 2021
- Horse Advancement Levels must be completed by May 7th to compete at a District and/or State Horse Show
- Hippology and Horse Judging Entries are due June 15, 2021
The State 4-H Horse Program would like to notify you to book your hotel reservations soon if you plan to attend/participate at the 2021 Fonner Park 4-H State Horse Expo. This year the Horse Expo (July 10th - 14th) is scheduled on the same dates as the National Jr. Angus Show. Since both events are happening at the same time.
The State 4-H Horse Program has blocked off a limited number of rooms with the Fairfield Inn hotel for 4-H families.

YQCA Training
If your 4-H’er is planning on showing livestock (beef, sheep, pig, goat, poultry, and rabbit) this year at county and/or state fair, they need to complete the YQCA Program by June 15th. The first YQCA in-person training is April 18th at the Webster County Fairgrounds beginning at 1:00 p.m. There will also be a training April 22nd at the Adams County Extension Office beginning at 4:30 p.m. Youth must pre-register to attend the face-to-face trainings. Coupons are available at the Extension Office for face-to-face trainings ONLY. Call, stop in, or email the office to get your coupon code(s). Youth may also complete YQCA online. Register for the in person training or complete the online training at https://yqca.learngrow.io/Account/Login/.

Enroll for 4-H
4-H Enrollment is open! Please do these easy steps to get re-enrolled for the 2020-2021 4-H year!
- Log-In at 4honline.com or click on the link provided below
- Update all contact information that has changed
- Select your projects
- Verify the number of years that you have been in 4-H- this must be accurate!
Each member, leader, and direct volunteer must re-enroll in 4-H every year. Log in with the email that you created the account with. If you forgot or do not remember your password, please click on " I Forgot My Password" and a temporary password will be sent to your email. If you have further problems, please contact the Extension Office.

Animal Science Discovery Days
Registration for the Animal Science Discovery Days (formerly Youth Animal Science Field Days) at NCTA in Curtis OR the Boone County Fairgrounds in Albion is officially open. Registrations will close 1 week prior to each event – May 20th for the NCTA event and June 2nd for the Albion event.

High School students (ages 14-18)! We are inviting you to join us for the Youth Leadership Conference, July 1-3, 2021, at the Nebraska State 4-H Camp in Halsey, NE. We’ll be taking advantage of some traditional camp activities while integrating leadership workshops and speakers to bring together and develop the leaders of Nebraska 4-H!

Nebraska 4-H Livestock Achievement Program
NEW OPPORTUNITY! The Nebraska 4-H Livestock Achievement Program is designed to promote all educational aspects of 4-H livestock projects including selection, production, leadership, and exhibition by recognizing youth striving to improve in their livestock project knowledge and leadership. The program recognizes Members of Excellence across all 4-H livestock project areas, including: beef, sheep, meat goat, swine, dairy cattle, dairy goat, rabbit, and poultry. Youth completing the achievement program and receiving member of excellence recognition in the various species will be recognized during the Parade of Champions, 4-H weekend at the Nebraska State Fair. 2021 Webster County 4-H Culinary Challenge

The 2021 Webster County Culinary Challenge is June 24th, 2021 at the Webster County Fairgrounds beginning at 6:30 p.m.. Please see the Webster County Fair Book for more details.
2021 Webster County 4-H Public Speaking Contest
Congratulations to all contestants!
What a great start to the 2021 4-H year! The Webster County 4-H Public Speaking Contest was held on April 18th at the Webster County Fairgrounds. There were 15 contestants who participated in the contest.
The contest began with Clover Kids, youth who are 5 to 7 years old. First up was Emily Pavelka of the Webster County Wranglers. Emily recited a poem titled “I Rode a Rainbow Unicorn” and received a rainbow ribbon.
Next up was the Junior Division starting with Brenlee Alber of the Blue Hill Better Herds Club. Brenlee gave a speech titled “Things I’ve Learned” and received a blue ribbon. Following Brenlee was Tallie Berns. Tallie gave a speech titled “Farm Life, Fun Life”, and received a blue ribbon. Next up was Zachary Engelhardt, a member of the Midway Webster Club. His speech titled “The 4-H Auction” received a purple ribbon and a Reserve Champion. To round up the Junior Division was Anna Macklin, a member of the Webster County Wrangler’s club. Her speech titled “4-H is a Family Affair” received a purple ribbon and was named Champion in that division.
Kaisha Alber of the Blue Hill Better Club started the Intermediate Division with a speech titled “Growing Up” and received a blue ribbon. Megan Macklin of the Webster County Wranglers was next with a speech titled “Horse Kill Pens in the United States”, received a purple ribbon, and was named Champion of the Intermediate Division. Ava Pavelka wrapped up the Intermediate Division with her speech titled “The Alarming Culinary Challenge”, which received a purple ribbon and was named Reserve Champion.
In the Senior Division, Ashley Bonifas, a member of the Midway Webster club, gave a speech titled “A Gluten Free Diet” that received a blue ribbon. Next up was Abigail Engelhardt, also a member of the Midway Webster Club, gave a speech “The Illegal Wildlife Trade” that received a purple ribbon and was named Champion. The last competitor of the Senior Division was Libby Macklin, a member of the Webster County Wranglers club. Her speech “Wild Horses: History, Management, and Challenges” received a purple and Reserve Champion ribbon.
Giving a Public Service Announcement this year were Grace Niemeyer of the 4-B 4-H club and Owen Pavelka of the Webster County Wranglers club. This year’s PSA theme was “Opportunity 4 All”. Grace and Owen both received blue ribbons.
Giving presentations this year in the Intermediate Division were Elisabeth Berns and Emily Engelhardt, a member of the Midway Webster club. Elisabeth’s presentation was titled “Spring Art…On a Cookie?”, which she received a purple and Reserve Champion. Emily gave a presentation titled “Peanut Butter Perfection” and received a purple and was named Champion of the Intermediate Presentations.
Megan Macklin, Ava Pavelka, Abigail Engelhardt, and Libby Macklin were chosen to go on and compete at the State 4-H Public Speaking Contest in June. Elisabeth Berns and Emily Engelhardt were both chosen to give their presentation at the Nebraska State Fair in August.
The judge this year was Sue Nielsen of Minden. Sue did a great job and gave the youth wonderful tips that they can use in the future. Everyone did awesome and we hope they continue taking part in years to come!

It has been a GREAT April! Katie has been going in every week for the last 5 weeks to the Blue Hill 5th & 6th Grade Reading- Mrs. Ochsner's Room.They have worked through the Embryology 101 - and have reached the end and are hatching chicks.
