Douglas College Updates
Criminology
Douglas College now offers a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Criminology. Students will graduate with 100 hours of work experience in the criminal justice field and skills in areas such as crime prevention, risk assessment, research, crisis intervention and conflict de-escalation. There are even scholarships specifically for students in programs like Criminology.
Theatre
While the May Audition dates have passed, there will be late auditions offered in August. You can find out more here for your Theatre students. Questions? Contact the Performing Arts program assistant Krista Graham.
Engineering
Engineering is becoming increasingly competitive across Canada. If you have any students who were not admitted to Engineering programs at Universities, there is still time to apply to Douglas College’s 2-year engineering program for Fall 2017. Don’t forget to check out the recent $9 million renovation which made way for our Engineering program’s new lab space.
Psychology Programs
The Bachelor of Arts in Applied Psychology has been successfully running for four years. Students enter this degree in third year, and are advised to complete an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree in their first two years, both which are university transferable. Our BA degree is equivalent to BA degrees at the major universities. Many of our students even finish their pre-requisites for the Masters of Arts in Counselling Psychology programs for SFU and UBC.
We also offer a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Psychology Honor’s degree option (fourth year entry) that gives students the opportunity to complete a self-directed research project. Graduates from this program have been accepted into Graduate School programs across Canada. Questions? You can get in touch with the program coordinator Dr. Laura Dane.
The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology offered jointly by Thompson Rivers University and Douglas College is designed to maximize flexibility since it allows for combinations of in-class (through Douglas College) and on-line coursework (primarily through TRU-Open Learning). It is a very broad program for students wanting to assemble one to meet specific interests. Scheduling of courses is particularly flexible since the on-line portion requires no fixed class attendance. The B.A. is granted by Thompson Rivers University. Dr. Donald Meen can answer your questions.
Hospitality Management
Students can now apply to Hospitality Management in Summer, Fall or Winter – although encourage your students to apply as early as possible. The program now feeds into the Bachelor of Business Administration at Douglas College, and of course, is university transferable across the country and internationally. Our grads find work at major hotel and restaurants all across the world.
Veterinary Technology
Did you know we have a 2-year Veterinary Technology diploma program? Students learn diagnostic lab techniques, medical and surgical nursing. They also learn how to perform lab tests, x-rays, anesthesia, dentistry, assist with spays and neuters. The program works exclusively with rescue animals and shelters to ensure pets become more adoptable. Learn more about Veterinary Technology!
Psychiatric Nursing
In September 2017, Douglas College will be offering a restructured 4-year Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (BSPN) program with new admissions requirements. Students start in the Academic Foundations for Potential Psychiatric Nursing Applicants (AFPN)which is comprised of 30 university transferable credits. Completion of this set of 10 university-transfer courses (30 credits) with a minimum grade of C+ in each course is the new academic admission requirement for the BSPN program. Admission into and completion of AFPN required courses does NOT guarantee admission to the BSPN program. Admission to the BSPN program is on a first qualified, first admitted basis until seats are filled. After admission to the BSPN program, the remaining three years of the program focus on psychiatric nursing studies
English Upgrading
Don’t forget about our English Upgrading program. For students who did not achieve English 12 with a C (60%) and are concerned about their options, English Upgrading is the place for them! We can help your students begin their college experience now. The program offers an efficient pathway to academic college programs by improving students’ skills in critical reading, strategic researching and academic writing. Upgrading courses can count as credits towards General Studies, and experience has shown that students are more successful in their regular college programs after taking our courses. Contact English Upgrading for more information.

The Janice Lee Blue Wave Bursary honours the legacy of Janice Lee, an 18-year-old who struggled with depression and anxiety for six years and took her own life in 2006. The following year, Blue Wave was created by her family to help break the silence around mental illness in teens and to provide support earlier. The vision of the Janice Lee Blue Wave bursary program is to invest in the resilience, wisdom and potential of young people and to reduce some of the barriers during the major transition from high school to higher education.
