Week 6 - September 25, 2022
Dear Coonley Parents/Guardians,
With half of Quarter 1 completed (congrats parents & students!), we would like to offer our families an opportunity to provide Ms. McLinden and me with some constructive feedback. We have added some demographic information to the survey to assist us in better understanding how different populations are experiencing Coonley. The survey will provide us with a pulse check on where we were successful and where we need to grow. All surveys are anonymous and will be used for reflective purposes. Thank you in advance for taking a few minutes to complete this survey.

We Are Connected & International Peace Day
To celebrate our September Mindset, We Are Connected, and International Peace Day, our students made Pinwheels for Peace in Art Class with Ms. Fenker.
Law Enforcement/Lockdown Drill
Each year, schools must conduct at least one Law Enforcement / Lockdown drill that prepares students and staff for incidents that may require a lockdown, such as an armed intruder, shooting incidents in the vicinity of the school, bomb threats, etc.
Coonley's Lockdown Drill will take place on Wednesday, September 28th. Staff will review drill procedures with students in advance and allow students to ask questions. Ms. Wheatman, school counselor, and Ms. Wakeland, social worker, will be available following the drill to provide any needed support. Additionally, we are sharing a short article that you may find helping for talking with your child at home: How to Talk to Kids About School Shootings
New Teachers & Staff
Please join us in welcoming new staff members who joined our Coonley team in the last month. The Coonley Faculty page of our website is updated with all teachers and staff for the 2022-2023 school year.
Volunteers Needed - Middle School Halloween Dance
FOC is teaming up with Coonley's administration to host the first school dance of the year. Students in grade's 6, 7, and 8 are invited to a Halloween dance on Friday, October 28. We need your help to make the dance great. Sign-up: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Beginning of the Year (BOY) Star360 (3-8) reports were sent home with Quarter 1 progress reports. Any students absent during testing will be tested this coming week, and a report will be sent home after they complete the assessment.
As you review your child's BOY report, it may be helpful to read A Parent's Guide to Understanding Star Result.
Pedestrian Safety Improvements
Over the next couple of months, CDOT will build out pedestrian safety improvements around public schools in the 47th ward, including at Coonley. CDOT will be building detached bump-outs at Coonley at Leavitt & Belle Plaine. These bump-outs will help shorten the crosswalk and increase pedestrians' visibility to oncoming cars, while cutting down the practice of vehicles stopping on the crosswalk to pick up or drop off.
The video in the tweet below explains more about the bump-outs.

We love our furry friends, however, please note that dogs are not allowed on CPS property.
Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and therapy dogs are not service animals under the ADA and are not allowed in any CPS school, on Board property or at Board events. Other species of animals, whether wild or domestic, trained or untrained, are also not considered service animals.
Fall After School Programs
After school programs begin on Monday, September 26th. Confirmation emails were sent last week with your child's program(s). All programs will exit out of Door 1, unless otherwise noted.
Please note: There will be no CPS staff-led after school programs on Thursday, November 10th.
Coffee with the Principal
Dates for Coffee with the Principal are tentative & are subject to change.

We invite people in the community to join us in reading this book as well. Everyone is welcome and we would love to see lots of the community join us. The discussion will be on Oct. 11 at 7:30 location TBD.
Volunteers Needed for Yearbook
Do you have a talent for taking pictures? Writing captions? Organizing files? Or do you want to a lead an after school yearbook club for 5th-8th graders? We are looking for volunteers to help us create an amazing yearbook to capture memories from the 2022-2023 school year.
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete this short form.
