FIVE FANTASTIC ICE BALL IDEAS
Ice balls are all the rage in the world of drinks today. And if huge, stunning and perfectly round ice balls were not enough, you can even jazz them up for even better presentation! Here are some ideas using a silicone ice ball maker:
1. Colored Ice Balls
Add just the right touch of color to your ice balls by adding a few drops of food coloring to the ice mold after the water filled ice ball has been in the freezer for about an hour. You can add a little more food coloring if you want more intense colors. If you're adding the ice balls to fruit juice, you can pour juice into the molds instead of water and freeze. That way you get colored AND flavored ice balls! Just add an ice juice ball into a glass, pour liquid juice over and serve. There’s no way your juice gets watery this way!
2. Flower Ice Balls
Looking to add a touch of zen into your drink? Use flower ice balls! You can easily make these by popping the flower of your choice into the ice ball mold, snap on the mold pieces and pour distilled water into the mold up to the fill line and freeze. When you unmold the ice ball you'll get a beautiful ice ball with the flower frozen inside. This would be very pretty if you use distilled water and freeze from top to bottom. You can do this by placing the filled ice ball molds in a cooler. Pour water around the molds and put the entire cooler into your freezer. Obviously, you'll need a cooler small enough to fit in your freezer. Once frozen, take out the cooler, chip away the ice around the sides of the molds to free them and unmold. Voila! Clearer ice balls allow the flower to show through much more.
3. Fruit and Herb Ice Balls
This is done in the same way as making flower ice balls but this time, using fruit and/or herbs! Be creative and use your favorite colorful fruit which is in season such as: strawberries, raspberries, lemon or lime wedges, slices of kiwi, or other colorful fruits or berries. Also, adding your favorite herb to your fruit balls not only gives extra flavor but looks impressive too!
4. Glam Ice Balls
Who knew ice could get glamorous? And to think it's very easy to do. Just make your ice balls, place in a wide-mouthed glass pour your favorite drink or cocktail over it and sprinkle some edible silver or gold flakes over the ice. It would be even better if you could find edible gold or silver leaves to use instead.
5. Multi-purpose Ice Balls
And who says ice balls are meant for drinks alone? There are a lot of things you can use ice balls for. One is for keeping things cool. Pop some ice balls into a cooler for your picnic and you'll be sure everything in there will stay cool all day. Another use for ice balls is for winter decorations. Make some colored ice balls, you can use tap water this time, and line them up along your driveway on top of snow. For parties, you can even pile some clear or colored ice balls on a pretty bowl or plate. They should keep their shape until the party is over (during winter!). You can also mix them up with crushed ice and with proper lighting, you'll get a gorgeous display of ice on your buffet table. Why not fill an ice bucket with ice balls and place your wine or champagne in it to keep chilled for longer?
