Summer Review Work
To help our students retain the skills they learned this past year, WDMS has put together a list of Summer Review assignments. Summer assignments for students enrolled in Algebra, Geometry, and Spanish I are required. All other assignments are optional for the summer of 2021. Parents will be notified in the coming weeks if their child is enrolled in any of the aforementioned courses.
OPTIONAL SUMMER READING INFORMATION
In terms of summer reading, we know how much students can gain from reading for enjoyment, so we encourage our students to continue to read based upon their interests. For those who would like to continue honing the critical reading skills taught in the classroom, we are making note-taking templates available to accompany the book of their choice. These can be found under the Curriculum tab on our school website by clicking “Summer Review Work”. Again, this option is also voluntary.
If you need assistance in selecting a book, please consider grade-level recommendations listed in the 2022 Summer Reading List: Association for Library Service to Children or book recommendations by both age and interest from Barnes and Noble's summer reading lists.
If you need additional recommendations for grade appropriate novels, please contact the Middle School for a list of novels available for distribution. (limited quantities available)
If you have any questions regarding borrowing a novel from WDMS, please email Kat Ziegler at kziegler@wdeptford.k12.nj.us.

Grade 6 - 8: LAL & Math Foundations Courses for All Students
In lieu of study hall, WDMS will again offer a semester of Foundations of Language Arts Literacy and a semester of Mathematics to ALL students in Grades 6 - 8 during the 2021-2022 school year. Each course will target individual skills and enhance overall comprehension and understanding in the respective content area. Please see more information below:
What is Foundations?
Foundations is a semester run course that takes place during the time in which your child would be in study hall. The Foundations coursework allows for students to receive personalized instruction thereby targeting specific skills and/or concepts identified based on multiple assessment data.
Is Foundations a graded course?
This course is graded based on classwork assignments only. There are no additional homework or assessment grades that are conducted during this course. The focus is to place emphasis on the classwork assignments which target the needs of the student to proactively strengthen literacy and math skills.
How will topics and standards be selected?
Foundations teachers will work closely with each grade level content area teacher to ensure that support is being provided for current topics and standards.
Can I opt my child out of taking Foundations of LAL and/or Foundations of Math?
Yes, parents may opt their child out of either or both Foundations courses. Students that opt-out of Foundations will be placed in Study Hall.

5th Grade: Instructional Homeroom
After a successful pilot year in 2021-22, we will continue with our Instructional Homeroom. During homeroom, additional Language Arts Literacy and Math instruction will be provided to fifth-grade students during the school year. Please see more information below:
This is my first child in WDMS. How long is homeroom, traditionally?
Homeroom is 18 minutes in length and was previously utilized as a Reading Homeroom.
How will the instructional time be built into the schedule?
In a six-day cycle, students will receive 3 days of additional instruction in Math and 3 days of additional instruction in LAL.
How much additional instructional time will be received with this new model?
Fifth-grade students will receive an additional 54 minutes of Math instruction and an additional 54 minutes of LAL instruction per six-day cycle. In a school year, this will equate to 36 additional 45 minute periods of instruction for each content.
