The Cyclone Watch
October 2021
From the Principal
I hope the challenges with bussing will be coming to an end soon. STA has hired several new drivers and they are currently in training. Our transportation coordinator is also working on modifying some bus routes to reduce or eliminate the number of routes not being manned each day. We greatly appreciate your patience. We know it has been challenging.
Media Center News
We have a lot of great new fiction & non-fiction books in the Media Center this fall. One of our favorites is The Line Tender by Kate Allen.
The Line Tender is the story of Lucy, the daughter of a marine biologist and a rescue diver, and the summer that changes her life. If she ever wants to lift the cloud of grief over her family and community, she must complete the research her late mother began. She must follow the sharks.

Check out the Flipster app to see all of our great magazines! Mrs. Kiley will be showing students how to access Flipster in their RTI classes.

Media Center - Full of Fun!
Every day we have a new joke posted outside of the Media Center. Tell your kid to stop by when they need a pick-me-up.
For example, today’s joke is:
Why don’t eggs tell jokes? They’d crack each other up!!
Come to the Media Center for any iPad issues or questions. Mrs. Kiley and Mrs. Iadanza are always available to help!

COVID information
The current CPS guidelines for quarantine are as follows:
**If you are fully vaccinated (2 weeks after second dose in a two-dose series and 2 weeks after J&J vaccine and have no symptoms-YOU DO NOT QUARANTINE
**If you tested positive for COVID in the last 3 months and have completed your isolation period and your symptoms have improved-YOU DO NOT QUARANTINE
**If you (staff/student) are >3 feet from a positive individual for 15 minutes or more cumulative during a 24-hour period and consistently and correctly wear a mask and have no symptoms, YOU DO NOT QUARANTINE
**If you (staff/student) are within 3 feet (0-36 inches) of a positive individual for 15 minutes or more cumulative during a 24-hour period and consistently and correctly wear a mask (with or without a mask)-YOU QUARANTINE
**If you (staff/student) are within 6 feet of a positive individual for 15 minutes or more cumulative during a 24-hour period and are NOT wearing a mask-YOU QUARANTINE. (lunch table, student with mask exemptions, sports teams, or clustering for long periods of time with no mask)
Correctly wearing a mask is so important in avoiding quarantine. Thank you for helping your student bring a mask every day, one to wear and a spare! Thank you all for understanding the need to quarantine if your student has been identified as a close contact to a positive case. The health room staff tries to contact parents by phone and by email with the necessary information if your student needs to quarantine after an exposure to a positive case. Often, many students are involved and there are only 2 of us in the health room so it may take a while to contact you by phone. Please make sure your phone allows voicemails, and answer when you see our number in the caller ID! Notify the school if you change your email or phone. The CPS district website has more information regarding Covid and district protocols.
Allergies are certainly a problem for people who live in Missouri. If your student suffers from symptoms of seasonal allergies, please talk to your health care provider about appropriate treatments. During this time of Covid concerns, it is not possible to determine when a person might have allergies or Covid. If treatment makes the symptoms disappear, then everyone will be happier, and the health room will not need to send a student home for allergy symptoms.
YOUR STUDENT SHOULD ALWAYS BRING A WATER BOTTLE TO SCHOOL!
Please help them remember this every day!

Flu Shots Are Coming
The 2021-22 injectable Influenza vaccine (flu shot) will be given free of charge to students at Jefferson Middle School on October 5, 2021, from 8:00 – 10:00 am. The Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services will be onsite to administer the vaccine in FAC’s Room 045. This opportunity to have your child vaccinated is strongly encouraged, but it is NOT mandatory.
For your child to be vaccinated, the 2021 Influenza “Flu” Vaccine School-Based Clinic Consent Form must be:
● FULLY completed and SIGNED by the parent or legal guardian
● Completed for EACH CHILD (you must return a separate form for each child you want vaccinated)
● Returned to your school nurse by September 30, 2021.
The injectable flu vaccine (flu shot) is the only type of flu vaccine that will be offered. FluMist nasal spray will not be given this season. The Vaccine Information Statement for the flu shot can be found at: http://www.immunize.org/vis/ . You may also contact your school nurse or the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services for Vaccine Information Statements.
If you decline, or do not return the required permission form to the school, the free flu vaccine will not be given to your student at school.
If you return the consent form, and your child receives the flu vaccine elsewhere, it is important that you notify your school nurse immediately. This will prevent your child from receiving an unnecessary second dose of vaccine.
Boone County’s free flu vaccine program is made possible by these generous partners:
● MU Children’s Hospital
● David B. Lichtenstein Foundation
These organizations are funding free flu shots for all Boone County children age 6 months – 18 years of age. Children who do not get the vaccine at school may receive free flu shots at the health department clinic, 1005 West Worley. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 573-874-7356.
If you have any further questions please contact your school nurse, Betty Cramer, RN at 573-214-3210.
Or email the nurse at ecramer@cpsk12.org

Guidance Can Help!
Are you in need of clothing help? Extra food for home? School supplies? We have resources for those things and can help you. Please call the Guidance Office (214-3212) and speak to the registrar, Amy Gerskin, and a counselor can help. Please note if you would like a counselor to call you, or just get the needed items to your student. Requests are confidential.
TNADO News
TNADO (The Non-Alcohol and Drug Organization) is a great club for your child to join if they want to have fun, help others, learn about some important issues and make new friends. Our first meeting is Tuesday Sept. 28th at 2:45 in the Media Center. We will do some get to know you activities, then go over the calendar for the year and then walk to DQ to get some ice cream. Please have your child bring some money to pay for their ice cream, if possible, on the 28th. Rides should be ready at 3:45 or students should sign up for the activity bus the morning of the 28th if needed.
