We're On A MISSION!

We had a fantastic turnout of Mission-Minded Mavericks on Wednesday (was it the pizza?)! I had high expectations, but even those were exceeded by some of the great suggestions and observations made by our talented parents. While healthy and respectful debate ensued, the general consensus was that the following mission statement is best on track to our soon-to-be-realized final goal: empower the St. Mary Magdalen family to witness the Gospel and grow through faith, academics and service. This is still open to tweaks and revisions, so please feel free to email me your thoughts.

CURIOSITY

Please check out the excellent op-ed below from New York Times Columnist David Brooks on The Moral Power of Curiosity:

GROWTH MINDSET: Bill Gates Gets On Board With Us

As you know, we're big on the growth mindset at SMMS. We've been emphasizing it for a few years now. Now, none other than Bill Gates buys in as well (check out the article below)! It's a pretty simple, but powerful idea: our intelligence is not fixed, but can grow through working (mainly reading) hard. We strive to instill this mindset in our students, and not just so that they can improve themselves, but also so that they can use their gains to improve the world.

A GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION FROM THE JASCEK FAMILY

SMMS expresses its deep gratitude to the family of Cliff Jascek, who donated $6,000 for our school's Science Lab. Generosity like that of the Jasceks is part of what makes us Maverick Strong.

HIGH SCHOOL FAIR

The 2nd Annual High School Fair was a great success, with our students taking advantage of the unique opportunity to make an impression on Admissions folks from our seven local Catholic High Schools. Nice work, Mavs!

STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Maverick empowerment was on full display this afternoon as our 4th - 8th graders actively participated in their school by listening to great speeches from their classmates and casting their votes. Many thanks to Mr. Casey for organizing the elections and serving as faculty moderator this year. Results will be announced on Monday.

SCHOOL PICTURES THIS WEDNESDAY!

My Story Telling Place will be doing our school photos this year. The date has been set for Wednesday, September 17. This is a Mass Day, so our kids should be looking SHARP.

Pope Francis On Happiness

In an earlier WW, we featured an article on Pope Francis's emphasis on the Beatitudes as a road to happiness. In a recent interview, Pope Francis offered more guidelines to achieving greater happiness. These included:

  • Let go of the negative;
  • Live and let live;
  • Be giving of yourself to others;
  • Be kind, humble, and calm;
  • Have a healthy sense of leisure;
  • Make Sundays a day for family time, not work;
  • Find dignified work for young people;
  • Care for creation;
  • Inspire through witness and engage in dialogue; and
  • Promote peace.

Season of Welcome

This weekend, the Archdiocese of San Antonio will begin "The Season of Welcome". The primary purpose of the Season of Welcome is to proclaim the saving love of Jesus Christ and to invite others to an encounter with Him in the beauty of the Mass. This New Evangelization outreach effort aims to let people know that all are WELCOME in the Catholic Church.

Grandparent Brunch

Wow. We were prepared for a solid turnout of 100. We were ill-prepared for a crowd of over 250. I apologize for any inconvenience caused. That said, it was truly inspiring to see such a huge crowd. Somehow, Chef Hsu and Joe were able to feed everybody delicious, free food. Many thanks to the parents who stepped in to help, and you, the families, for your patience and good will.

A Call For Student Crossing Guards

We are in the beginning stages of starting a Student Crossing Guard Initiative at our school. If your child wants to participate in this, please have him/her let me know, or you can let me know directly. Thanks!

Noon Dismissal & After School Clubs

For the rest of the year, on noon dismissal days, there will be no clubs, as this time is dedicated to faculty professional development.

Athletics

Simply put: The Maverick Athletic Program is on a roll!

The Soccer team remains undefeated, after a convincing Monday home win against Notre Dame and a narrow, hard fought and well-deserved Thursday victory over St. Peter and Paul in New Braunfels. Next week, our Mavs take on St. Thomas More on Monday and St. John Berchman on Thursday. Go Mavs!

Our football team kicked off their season in fantastic fashion, easily defeating St. James on Tuesday and narrowly defeating St. John Berchman on Wednesday. Next week, they take on St. Leo's on Tuesday and St. James (Seguin) on Wednesday. Go Mavs!

Our Volleyball team continues to make great strides. This weekend, they're striving for the championship at the Providence High School Tournament. Earlier this week, the A Team defeated St. James on Tuesday and St. Peter and Paul in New Braunfels. The B Team came up short in both games, but continues to improve. Go Mavs!
