Mrs. Andrea Ferguson, Principal
It’s hard to believe that first quarter comes to an end next Friday, October 18th! Remember, that students are dismissed one hour early that day. Be sure to check your students' progress on Gradebook.
Our students and staff have been doing an amazing job this quarter! Our students have completed their first round of MAP testing. These tests give us valuable data to help guide instruction.
Your students' teachers will be reaching out with information regarding Fall Conferences. Teachers will have available hours to meet with parents during the week of October 21st.
Thank you for all of your support in making Coy a great place to learn and grow!
Mr. Josh Baker, Assistant Principal
It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of the first quarter of the school year! We have had a great start and we are looking forward to many great events this fall. I have enjoyed seeing our students get settled in at this wonderful middle school as they begin their journey through the year. As we settle into fall, I want to encourage your children to get involved in a club, activity, or sport at CMS. There are so many great clubs and extra-curricular programs at CMS that our students can take advantage of. This is a great way for students to get involved in their school, work closely with one of our staff members, and make great friends! Continue to check our announcement page for more information or reach the Coy Office for more information.
Please see the list below to find our clubs and advisors at CMS. I hope you will have a conversation with your child about how to get involved and take advantage of these great opportunities at Coy Middle School!

Coy Middle School starts a new Hope Squad!
The Hope Squad program is a school-based peer support team that partners with local mental health agencies. Peers select students who are trustworthy and caring individuals to join the Hope Squad. Squad members are trained to watch for at-risk students, provide friendship, identify suicide-warning signs, and seek help from adults.
HOPE Squad members are NOT taught to act as counselors, but are educated on recognizing suicide warning signs and how to properly and respectfully report concerns to an adult.
The dedication and leadership of the advisors and the relationship with the local mental health agency is crucial to the success of a Hope Squad Program. Research has shown that Hope Squads are very successful in reaching out to fellow students who may be struggling by breaking the code of silence and referring these students to an adult.

Many of us, children and adults, experience anxiety at some time during our lives. Understanding it and knowing how to cope with it is important! With knowledge and skill, we are able to better help our kids and ourselves cope.
What is Anxiety?
The Child Mind Institute has great information about anxiety and can be found at https://childmind.org. The following excerpt is from their website:
While feeling anxious is a natural reaction to stressful situations, an anxiety disorder can be diagnosed when a child’s anxiety interferes with her ability to handle everyday situations, or prompts her to avoid things that most people her age enjoy. Anxiety has many symptoms and can look very different from child to child. Here are some common signs that might indicate an anxiety disorder:
— Trouble sleeping
— Complaining about stomach aches or other physical problems
— Avoiding situations
— Exhibiting clingy behavior around parents or caregivers
— Trouble focusing in class or being very fidgety
— Disruptive behavior and explosive outbursts
— Overly self-conscious behavior
Anxiety Coping Skills
Understanding what anxiety is and the signs of anxiety is just the beginning. It is important to have coping strategies to deal with it. Some of the strategies that can be helpful are:
— Practicing Relaxation and Mindfulness
— Journaling or Writing it Out
— Talking About It
https://www.psycom.net/kids-coping-skills-anxiety is a website that gives examples of how these 3 coping strategies can be utilized to help with anxiety.
It is always a good idea to keep your doctors aware of physical and mental health concerns. If you are concerned that your child is struggling with anxiety, please let them know so they can help you. If there is anything that we can do to support you, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

A couple tips for A+ Attendance Below!
Jackie Stubbs
Jaclyn.stubbs@beavercreek.k12.oh.us
Building Office Assistant
We love seeing our Coy students at school! We understand there are circumstances when your student will have to miss school, but please follow our Attendance Procedures to ensure that you are complying with House Bill 410 to have your student properly excused. Please account for your student every day by emailing or calling the office to notify us of any absences, late arrivals, or early dismissals.
There is an Attendance Tab on our website coy.gocreek.org under the Parent tab with everything you need to know for great Attendance! There is also a section in your students handbook that clearly defines our Attendance polices and House Bill 410 clarification. Always feel free to call or email with specific questions you might have about your child’s attendance.
Students should be reported absent any time they are out of school!
Even though FLEX is at the end of the day, the minutes still count as the school day when taking a student out early.
You can call in a student to the Attendance Line 429-7577 Option 1, or you can email to coyattendance@gocreek.org.
If you call a student in or email an absence you no longer have to send a parent note the following day with the student! This counts as your parent note!
Our start time has changed, but our Tardy policy is still the same and clearly outlined in the Student Handbook. The front doors lock at 7:30 and students must come through the office at this time for a tardy slip. A student is granted a Free Tardy each quarter (because we know life happens), but after that consequences begin with each additional tardy. Remember…overleeping, missing the bus, traffic, inclement weather, parent running late, etc. are not considered an Excused Tardy.
You MUST include a reason for the absence.
If a reason is not included, it is Unexcused.
If a child has an appointment, a specific appointment reason must be given (i.e. dentist, orthodontist, Dr., etc.) Just writing “appointment” is unexcused.
Parent/Guardian may submit 10 parent notes (or phone calls) documenting an Excused Absence reason. After the 10 notes are exhausted, medical notes will be required for absences to be excused.
Reasons for Excused absences include illness, death in the family, pre-approved family vacations (up to 5 days), observation of a holiday, etc. (other reasons may be included). Medical appointments are always Excused with a medical note. Medical notes must be provided within 3 days of absence. After 3 days they will be marked Unexcused.
An absence is Unexcused if your student overslept, missed the bus, running late, car trouble, family vacation without approval (or over 5 days), or student refusal to go to school (other reasons may be included).
A Note from the Cafeteria
Make sure to check your student’s lunch accounts to ensure they have sufficient funds. You can access your student’s lunch account and deposit funds via https://www.spsezpay.com/BCmeals/login.aspx.
Please call Cindy Steeley at 458-2531 if you have any questions.
