Rigor in the Classroom
One of the things mastery learning does for us is give us a framework for discussions with teachers about rigor. As I walk through classrooms the first thing I'm looking for is at what Depth of Knowledge is instruction happening. As you are having coaching conversations with teachers here's a document that you can put in your toolbox to help you frame discussions and give you ideas on how to help teachers improve.
Reading Instruction
These are the Concord K-6 Literacy Instructional Expectations:
- Standards based instruction - intentionally focus on a standard & offer students opportunity to practice the focus
- Identified objectives with assessment to show mastery of objective
- Follow the curriculum map
- Components must include: Whole group modeling, guided practice (small group), student collaboration, independent practice
- 5 components of reading: vocabulary, phonics, phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, fluency
- Monthly Close Reading
Things to consider-
- How many classrooms in your building are doing this?
- How are you helping your staff better understand these expectations?
Zemelman, Daniels, and Hyde note the Gradual Release Model as the number one structure of best practice instruction that improves outcomes in their book Best Practice. The video below is a must see. Please take the time to watch it, rewatch it, and watch it again.
