School Safety Drills
The health and safety of our students and staff are our top priority. Under the Illinois School Safety Drill Act, all public schools are required to conduct a variety of safety drills annually. Drills practiced include fire (3), evacuation (1), shelter-in-place (1), and law enforcement (lockdown/active shooter) (3). See below for our fall drill schedule:
- Fire Drills : September 12th, 2022
- Lockdown Drill : September 9th, 2022
- Tornado Drill : September 12th, 2022
- Bus Evacuation : September 6th, 2022
Preparing for various scenarios in advance helps empower staff and students in the case of a real emergency. While the chance of an incident happening is unlikely, we care about the well-being of our students and staff and are required by law to educate our school community to ensure emergency preparedness for all. As indicated above, our school will participate in a lockdown drill on DATE. We understand that some drills, particularly the law enforcement/lockdown drill, coul cause anxiety for some students. Should you have questions about the drill or wish to opt your child out of the drill, please fill out and submit this form to your child’s school or contact the main office at PHONE NUMBER. Under state law, schools must still provide alternative safety education related to an active threat to students who do not participate in the lockdown drill.
Message from the LMC
Hello RBMS families,
My name is Mrs. Brogan, and I am the librarian at RBMS! It has been a great first week. The library (LMC) is open and students have been busily searching for an independent reading book (IDR). Many of your students will be touring the library in the next couple of weeks. Mrs. Blaseck and I look forward to getting to know each of them throughout the year.
The LMC in middle school is quite different than in elementary school. The library is open all day and available to students and staff for multiple purposes (book checkout, research, group or independent work time, etc.). Throughout the day, I will join classrooms and meet classes or groups of students in the LMC. Something else that is different is the variety of books students have access to. In elementary school, students want to read about middle school activities, and
in middle school, they want to read about high school topics. Please know we have books with more mature content and are considered YA (young adult). I ask that you have conversations with your child about what you deem appropriate. This will be different
for all families, and that is OK. I also encourage you to ask your child about what he/she is reading and continue that dialogue to learn more about your growing and changing middle schooler. As I get to know your child as readers and individuals, I will be able to encourage new genres, authors, and formats.

Cross Country-Practice started Monday Aug 22nd
Cross Country is a running sport that helps promote health and an appreciation of the outdoors. Runners run a two-mile race at scheduled meets. At practices, runners will build stamina running the Bernotas track as well as “courses” around the school property and nearby streets. Students will be expected to run while at practice and the effort to push themselves is part of our sport and important to the team.
Practices are Mondays through Thursdays after school until 4:00 PM and Meets are Tuesdays and Thursdays* from 4:00 PM until approximately 5:30 PM. Cross Country is a team sport where runners earn points, so attendance is mandatory. Please see the posted 2022 Girls & Boys Cross Country Schedule of practices and meets to ensure that your child is able to commit to the team for this season. Students involved in other clubs or activities may wish to join track in the spring.
City League Volleyball - 7th and 8th Grade

Games are held on Saturday Mornings. 2022 City League Volleyball Schedule. Contact Ms. Austin dmaustin@d47.org or Mrs. Cavicchioni alcavicchioni@d47.org.
Getting to School on Time
As per our district policy, all students must be on time to their CORE 1 class by 7:40 to begin their school day, unless a doctor/dentist writes a note with a valid excuse for the tardy. Our staff will support students that are habitually tardy by meeting them to create a plan that will foster their time management skills and allow them to monitor their own attendance data so that they can develop a life-long habit of being on time. We will begin tracking our tardies on Monday August 29th.

Clinician Corner
As we begin establishing new routines and habits at the beginning of this school year, we need to consider the amount of quality of sleep we and our children are getting. Sleep is very influential in our social and emotional health, as well as how we function while completing day to day activities. The following article outlines how much sleep is enough for children in various age ranges.
