This African-American Heritage Month, join the Old Jail Art Center as we celebrate three important figures in American History. In this program, students will explore the lives and stories of accomplished cowboys from the Old American West - Nat Love, Bill Pickett, and Bose Ikard.
Practicing both listening comprehension and visual thinking skills, students will make guided notes and comments throughout a multi-media presentation which examines the influence of these historical figures within both cowboy culture and the era of manifest destiny.
Following the presentation, students will then examine and discuss artifacts from the museum archives to review the idea of a SYMBOL and infer various American values that each may express (such as individualism, ingenuity, and personal freedom).
At the conclusion of the program, students will create a boot and spur craft, influenced by the traditional cowboy dress. This craft will include the composition of a brief Acrostic Poem inspired by the life of one of the reviewed figures.
