Main Street Parent Institute for Quality Education Graduation
LCAP Goal/Action 4.9 - Parent Education
On March 3 the Main Street Middle School cohort of the Parent Institute for Quality Education program competed the 10-week training series. 59 parents completed the series and were presented with diplomas in a ceremony following a series of presentations by distinguished guest speakers. PIQE is a national organization with evidence-based programs that train parents to actively engage in their children’s education PIQE provides empowering information, skills development and support systems for low-income families and English Learners Studies show that children of PIQE program completers attend college at higher rates than their peers due to PIQE’s success in empowering parents to be advocates for their children’s education.
CONSTRUCTING MEANING
LCAP Goal/Action 6.2 - Support for English Learners
On March 3-4, a team of middle school teachers, TOSAs and Principals attended the Constructing Meaning Leadership Symposium. CM our District’s instructional focus at the secondary level for providing highly effective integrated ELD. The SUSD team participated in a table walk in which CM schools rotated around the room to exchange ideas on best practices for CM implementation. The SUSD team also had time to plan next steps for continuing implementation and expansion of CM throughout the secondary grades and beyond. These include considering adding 6th grade to the current cohorts, planning for up to three new cohorts for CM training in 2020-21, starting up a CM PLC, using the C.I.F.T. process to focus CM strategies, and implement 3-week assessment cycles.
