Tumuaki Kōrero
Nau mai hoki mai ki te kura o Te Huruhi School. A very warm welcome back to our Te Huruhi whānau and a special welcome to our new whānau joining us this term!
Te Huruhi kaiako/teachers have planned a fun and exciting term for our tamariki and we are looking forward to seeing them achieve their learning goals in Term 4.
We welcomed our new whānau with a whole-school pōwhiri. We were proud of our tamariki as they gave their kōrero and supported the karanga. Ka rawe Blake, Nick, Isla and Sahara!
Thank you for keeping your tamariki with you on Monday and Tuesday this week. Kaiako worked hard on our two teacher only days developing our local curriculum. We are looking forward to sharing our mahi with you later this term.
Finally, please see the information below about the "Keeping Ourselves Safe" programme which is being delivered in our akoranga/classrooms this term. The programme has been created by NZ Police and a school community officer will work with kaiako to deliver some of the lessons. They will also provide an information session for parents with a Q and A session next Wednesday 26th at 5pm in the hall meeting room.
Ngā mihi nui,

Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme
This term our teachers are starting the NZ Police programme "Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS)". This is a NZ Police created programme that is taught in New Zealand schools. It forms part of the Health and PE curriculum and contains important learning for our tamariki.
To support kaiako/teachers, some lessons are provided to tamariki by a NZ Police Education Officer who will come to Te Huruhi School.
The YouTube video below will give you a general overview of the programme.
KOS is run every second year but due to Covid restrictions, we have not been able to offer the programme since 2019.
What will tamariki learn?
They will learn:
to work out when their safety is at risk
how to keep safe when they meet and mix with other people
who and how to ask for help if they, or someone they know, is being abused
to go on asking for help until someone does something to stop the abuse
that it is important to make and follow personal, family and school safety rules.
They will know:
that abuse is never okay
that abuse is never their fault.
What part do parents, caregivers and whānau play?
Parents and whānau are strongly encouraged to support Keeping Ourselves Safe. You can:
find out about abuse and what to do if you think a child you know is being abused.
talk to your child about what they have learnt in Keeping Ourselves Safe.
set safety guidelines with your family.
help young children with the Keeping Ourselves Safe activities they bring home.
give the same safety messages as the school is giving.
You can attend a meeting at school on Wednesday 26th October at 5pm in the hall meeting room for further information and a Q and A session with our School Community Officer, Senior Constable Tineke Laing.
Please follow the links below for more information. This will help you to form any questions you have about the programme at the meeting with Senior Constable Tineke Laing next week.
SCHOOL NEWS
Sun Safety
Hats
During terms 4 and 1 it is a school requirement that all tamariki and staff wear a wide brim or legionnaire style hat while outside. Students without hats will need to remain under cover and will not be able to participate in class or playtime activities outside.
School hats are available for sale from the office at the cost price of $20, however any wide brim or legionnaires hat is acceptable. Please ensure you name your child's hat or even decorate it for easy identification.
We also encourage you to ensure that your children wear clothing that will protect their skin during the summer terms. You may also wish to provide your child with sunscreen and show them how to apply it effectively.
Thank you for supporting this programme to protect our tamariki from the harmful effects of ultra violet light. (Please note that caps are not acceptable as they do not provide sufficient protection.)
School Fun Colour Run
We’re excited to be participating in the School Fun Colour Run again this year! Our Fun Run date will be Friday 25th November. We last ran this in 2018 and it was a highlight for everyone involved and this time we get to use our new field!
We’ll be launching the fundraising at the start of term 4, so make sure to keep your eyes out! @nzschoolfunrun
We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend this event. If you would like to join the fundraising committee or are able to volunteer to help out on the day, please let the office know.
We can’t wait!

REMINDERS
Just a friendly reminder that our school day starts at 8.30am and ends at 2.30pm. The classrooms are open from 8am and children may start arriving from then, but please not before. Staff are often in morning meetings or preparing for the day ahead. Also, please be prompt in the afternoons for pick up at 2.30pm.
KEEP CUPS DISCOUNT
You may recall from last year that Akoranga Ono created a project known as the coffee cup story. It’s a passionate and very cool story of children acting on knowledge to make a difference to their environment. Please come and see the big book that the children created if you’d like to know more.
Anyhoo... from that and since then, we have maintained contact with Keep Cup Australia, to whom the children wrote a persuasive letter. They have very generously offered our community a 40% discount on all Keep Cups purchased via the website, using the code below. Kaiako, please share this with any tamariki who were in Akarongo Ono last year, your whānau, all Te Huruhi staff and whānau have been invited to take up this offer.
Please share code TEHURUHISCHOOL40 which will need to be entered into the promo code field when checking out of the website to receive 40% off the purchase on the New Zealand version of our website https://nz.keepcup.com/
The code is valid until the 27th of August, 2022
In an effort to keep everyone safe, please use the footpaths when bringing your tamariki into our kura. Please do not use the gate that leads directly to the car park.
If your child catches a bus to school in the morning, please remind them to enter our grounds via the gate near the dental clinic. This will ensure that they do not need to cross the car park entrance/exit.
At the end of the school day, we would now like to invite you to enter the school grounds to collect your children. When leaving, please avoid walking through the car park.
