Message From Mrs. Robertson
Kindness Month was a huge success! It was fun to celebrate with all the special spirit days and activities. Thank you to the Peer Mentors and Mrs. Kearney for all their hard work and to all the students and staff for their enthusiastic participation.
Now that we have moved into March we want to continue in our daily practice of treating others with kindness. The ways in which we show kindness go beyond giving resources to those in need and saying kind words. Kindness is our daily practice of making decisions that make others feel accepted, appreciated and included through our words and actions. As a school we continue to remind students that there are topics and actions that are appropriate for school and others that are not. Some of these topics include respecting personal space and expressing our feelings towards ourselves and others. These topics can make others feel uncomfortable when demonstrated in an inappropriate way and we want school to be a place where everyone feels safe.
I am asking for your help, as you have conversations with your child before they head off to school and when they return. Take a moment to discuss ways to show kindness through their words and actions and how others are showing kindness to them. Together we will make CMES the place where kindness blooms and grows!
Yours in Education,
Kimberly Robertson

Thinking Ahead
We are preparing for the 2020-2021 school year. As we begin making class lists we want to offer parents that opportunity to share their thoughts on the type of teacher they feel would best meet their child's needs. Although we cannot honor specific teacher requests we will take into consideration parent input. Please send your requests in writing to both Mr. Veronie (john.veronie@fcps.org) and Mrs. Robertson (kimberly.robertson@fcps.org)
Pre-Kindergarten, Inclusive Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Registration is coming!
Pre-Kindergarten, Inclusive Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten registration for the 2020-2021 School Year begins March 16. Walk-in registrations are welcome and encouraged from 9:30am until 4:00 pm M-F. We will also be holding registration the evening of May 13 from 5:30-7:00 pm. If you arrive prior to 9:30 or between the hours of 3:00-4:00 we will be in the middle of arrival and dismissal of students and our office staff may not be able to assist you as quickly as they will during other times of the school day.
Please bring the following items required to register your child: birth certificate, immunization records, proof of your current address (water/electric bill or lease), and parents' photo identifications. Parents of students applying for pre-kindergarten must also provide proof of income (W-2, 3 consecutive paystubs within the last 6 months, or an independence card). Child must be 4 or 5 years old on or before September 1, 2020.
Inclusive pre-k is a program for 3 year olds in the morning and 4 year olds in the afternoon. This 3 year old classroom will consist of typical age peers and students with IEPs. The students will attend either M/W or T/Th. The typical age peers students will be chosen randomly to participate in the program. The 4 year old classroom will consist of typical age peers and students with IEPs. The students will attend M-F. The seven typical age peers will be chosen randomly to participate in this program. Applying to the program does not guarantee acceptance into either of the inclusive pre-k programs.
On May 7th we will be hosting Kindergarten screening assessments from 5:30-7:00. These will be scheduled when parents come in for Kindergarten registration.
We Want Your Feedback
One of our school improvement goals has been to improve our communication and the overall school experience for you and child. We have been working on various ways to improve the way in which we provide information and interact with our families and students. We are asking for your feedback related to these areas. Below you will find a survey link that will allow you the opportunity to share your feedback. The survey will only take approximately 10 minutes. Thank you in advance for your help, as we work to provide the best interactions between home and school.
Maryland Officials Warn Parents of Latest Social Media Video "Challenge"
The “challenge” has been disseminated on the app TikTok. In the "challenge" a student is asked to jump, and then another person kicks the legs out from underneath jumper, who falls to the ground. This behavior is very dangerous and can lead to serious injury. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals are first on the scene to see these preventable injuries. Officials from MIEMSS say they can range from broken bones to devastating head injuries. Unfortunately, head injuries can have life-altering, permanent disabling consequences.
Parents are encouraged to speak with their children about the dangers of this and other social media challenges that can seriously harm their child and to have a discussion on safe social media use at school and at home.
